I've been hearing a few folks talk about Milsim style play and I'm just wondering what they actually mean, as I thought scenario and magfed would be Milsim style. I'm a little curious I'm missing out lol
MilSim by name is Military Simulation, and will be mission based. Information about what is going on in the UK is at:
http://forums.milsimcombat.com/index.php

MilSim is sometimes misused about woods play compared to tournament play

Magfed equipment (other than pistols) was pretty much exclusive to MilSim, but more equipment has become availble.
Rather than being exclusive to 'serious' MilSim this has opened the market up as a form of limited paint.
The specifics of a MagFed game these days will vary - obvioulsy including MagFed guns but other guns such as tube fed, pump actions may be allowed.

Scenario is defined by the games storyline. It could be very rough scenario theme, and the game is just two opposing teams, or it could be anything up to a highly complex game with objectives entwined into the scenario storyline.
Some players will get deep into the scenario, dressing to meet the theme, modifying their gear etc.
Information on scenario is at:
http://www.ukscenario.com/forum/index.php
A scenario game that gets deep into the storyline does not need the players to dress up etc, however they should read up on the scenario to find out what is going on.
You need to know how the game is scored, instead of just shooting and capturing areas and objects it may matter when you capture something. You are wasting your time and paint fighting over a base that is worth nothing, but at a certain time or on the hour it may be worth everything - if you hold it all day then you get the points at each time, but there is something else you could be doing in the meantime and there may be more points to be had by recapturing at the right time then just holding.

An addendum:
Cqb in what you have seen will probably be within milsim
However CQB is Close Quarter Battle, and now is probably the best time for this in the uk, not just within milsim - you can find it in a variety of ways in uk paintball

Speedball technically has this, as it can be up close & personal
you find it in the urban sites - particularly the army training areas like copehill down & sennybridge, there are open elements, building to building and room to room
Also in the unusual sites such as drakelow tunnels and the Exeter bunker
At paintfest this year we ran a cqb tournament in the killhouse - and no one will keep us from going back!
When you don't know what's around the next corner you find out what adrenalin means

I think of rec ball as the milsim style of play(games that have objectives ie capture this or defend that) and tippmans, tm15, dye dam etc. as milsim markers. You can always go deeper like d-day and other events for milsim play(huge amount of players and deeper scenario/story).

But if they aren't military simulation then they aren't Milsim

Rec is recreational - if you're playing amongst inflatables for fun, that's recreational, if as a tournament then that's the sport
Objectives such as capture are also part of tournament play - capture the flag is the core of tournament

Scenario is not necessarily Milsim, but there can be Milsim scenario

The dyedam could be used for Milsim
Tippmanns etc not necessarily so - it's a great big argument at the moment with magfed

Paintball is just paintball, how people play is up to them, and the type of game put on is up to the organiser
