Are slide shorts necessary?

No, but if you dive around then you do want them for the padding to protect you.
Some may wear them for crotch protection

Not NECESSARY, but very useful IMO. I never play without mine, mainly for the crotch protection. Don't find them uncomfy at all TBH.

I dont have slide shorys but i do have thigh and crotch protection in my trousers and yes as i experienced last sunday, shots to the nether regions aren't very pleasing lol

I have been playing for 12 years and have never worn slide shorts or crotch protection and have only been shot in the nads once.....its a personal preference thing.......personally, I don't prefer them.....

I wear them... when I first started playing, there was less padding in most pants. Over time this padding has increased, but I continue to wear slide shorts. More a personal routine / preference of having elbows, knees and slide shorts, as I've always played with them

So not essential, but if you are using pants with a lot of inherent protection, the benefit it probably marginal

I'm asking as i'm considering investing but I already use a box so don't need any more crotch protection, isn't it protection if sliding on your arse?

You can see the padding on the the hips and outside of thighs, which are the main contact areas for sliding

Decent Paintball trousers are fine for most occasions and have decent all round padding, but depends if you are going to be diving into bunkers. If you are, you will probably want all the padding you can get!!
