Ive just bought an adapter to refill my tanks at home and its different to the ones you usually see,so im not sure how to use it? Ive looked on the web and cant find much? Can anyone help?

Which type have you bought? They are generally A clamp or DIN fit, posting a photo might be easier.
Thats a DIN fit yes, I use the same adaptor

Just make sure you always press the purge button after you turn off the air, so it releases the pressure and makes it safe to remove.
