There is always the possibility that time travel is like a phone and only once we have built ours will we be able to receive calls(or people) there is some speculation that this or something similar is going on at cerns LHC in Switzerland

Or Steven Hawking and Einstein are right and you can only travel forward in time, with a faster than light spaceship .... Not that I believe we will ever actually get near to Light speed nevermind past it!
