Killer instinct/hunger/desire you could be the most talented guy on the field but if you don't want to shoot someone in the face and want to win every game then you may as well stay at home watching BabeStation...which is nice.

Are people really still writing paintball dissertations? Can't you just get one of the guys that did it last year to send you theirs? I'm sure you would find the last 10 guys to do this by just doing a quick search on here.

Come to mention it, have we ever had someone come on here and say "thanks guys for all the help with the dissertation, I knocked it outta the park and now have a hundred different companies beating down my door to hire me"?
How about "Hey you guys really helped out, and I got a high mark, so thanks?"

No to both huh?

Is this because:
a. the help people have given has been crap?
b. People are ungrateful?
c. It ended in disaster and the guy got the worst possible grade?
d. All of the above?

Well firstly, the reason I asked for help is to make what I'm doing more valid by having input from people within the paintball community. I've also been lucky enough to get guidance from a pro who I contacted through here, as there is no one else better to ask than some of the top individuals within the sport.

Secondly, I'll think you'll find that I have thanked everyone for their input so far, and as I wont be getting my grade back until late summer then I don't see how I can comment on how well I have done.

And finally, if you don't have anything valuable to contribute then why bother commenting at all?

Is it OK if I answer these in order?
Great.

1. Awesome. No, you're dead right.
2. Hemhem. I gave input. You didn't thank me. In fact, you got kinda arsey.
3. For my own amusement. I saw a thread that comes up every. single. year. I decided to ask whether anyone ever heard back from the students 'helped' in the past. I can ask that if I want to. I am the boss of me.

Well I appreciate that you took the time to read the thread and contribute in someway so I thank you for that. But your 'input' seemed merely a rant at previous threads which you say come up every year. Personally i've never seen them, this may be because i've only really been an active member since late summer this year (despite being an actual member since 2008). However, we have to go by published research and journals, so I very much doubt that any of these previous dissertations would be available or even form a solid justification for the study which I am doing. And yes, there was never any ambiguity as to who is the boss of you.

In all seriousness, I would aim the dissertation at the shifting demographic of paintball participants in light of the global recession, market forces and the general evolution of the playing spectacle at the upper levels. It would be a more mature approach and one that I would have thought would garner higher marks from a professor, but what do I know?

Remember how long a dissertation is, Missy-Q. Maybe the subject you pointed out there does not fit the criteria and past work that Stephen has done, he hadn't thought of that, or simply he's not interested in writing about that. Also, if you notice, he has to adhere to some sort of rule his professor has supplied, something to do with 'Qualities', so best bet is that there is a boundary around what he can write about ;)
A dissertation requires a lot of time and work- passion is a must. 30,000 word journal aint easy to write, and maintain a professional standard throughout, I'm sure most people would agree here. (30,000 is a guesstimation, that's what it is in my subject, not sure of Stephen's)

Your posts seem to rather hostile, and I can't understand why. Are you annoyed at students asking every year for help with stuff? Heck, if people don't wanna give help, they don't have to :p Its voluntary.

Stephen, if you need a proof reader before you submit, lemme know :) I'd be happy to help out a fellow student!

That would seem like more a report/essay instead of a study. I'm looking at performance profiling, and applying this to paintball to see how helpful teams will find it to gauge their training during the off-season. We need solid grounds for the work we want to do, and following the most recent publication of a journal which looked at performance profiling, they stated the need for it's use in a wider range of sport settings. And given that paintball is not an area with any published research, then this has given me a solid basis for the research I am doing. And we had to propose our study and give justification as to why we want to do it before it was approved, which has lead me to subject area that i'm doing.

Vimto Thank you, at least someone understands where I'm coming from :) But luckily my dissertation is no-where near 30,000 words, only a mere 5000. Which does suck in a way because it makes writing a lengthy introduction and discussion rather difficult! And thank you for the offer, really appreciate it dude. I may have to take you up on that :)
