Wonder how many teams will opt for a road trip forgetting about toll roads, or swinging through Belgium, Luxemberg and Switzerland to reduce toll roads and then incurring higher fuel fees :)

Really? I think you credit paintballers with less intelligence than I do.

Most route planners and satnavs will alert you to the fact that the route has toll roads, some will even calculate costs.

Switzerland has toll roads too, you need to purchase the annual 'vignette' before using the Swiss expressways, the alternative routes may be highly scenic but will also be highly time consuming, plus, depending on your planned route there maybe tunnel tolls to pay on top.

From Calais using the French motorway system its about a 12hr drive, before stops, and with a car full of paintballers each stop takes about an hour.

Your alternative route would take about another 4hrs driving. Teams will need to be on site the afternoon before play starts for registration, so this will probably add at least another two nights accommodation for the return journey and extra time off work etc.

Some might consider it an alternative to flying, others may not.

I've got the train to the South of France before, takes about 9 hours from St. Pancras (from memory), change in Paris (Gare Du Nord to Gare l'est). You can book it through the Eurostar or SNCF website.

I have no clue about their rules regarding paintball markers though. You can bring much more baggage with you in general though which helps.

Also consider Toulon or Marseilles airports as alternatives to Nice. Toulon is not well served by public transport but you can get a coach from Marseille airport to the Railway station. Once you are near a decent sized railway station you can zip up and down the Cote D'Azur pretty swiftly.

Obviously all dependent on where the venue ends up.

I walked straight through with my marker both ways to Paris. A team mate got stopped but spoke to someone and said us not turning up with this is like McLaren turning up to F1 without a car. They let him through.

I'd be surprised if there's baggage checks on French national lines.

Good to know about the eurostar, by the way there's definitely no baggage checks on SNCF just the Eurostar.

edit: the eurostar is pretty relaxed about most things (compared to planes) but the only thing they won't allow is Stanley blades. A multi tool is fine though. Go figure. I travel back and forth with tools quite a lot so have been turned over by the baggage guys a few times.

We had a delay travelling with Eurostar to Disney event last year.
They pulled all the markers from everyones kitbags and put them in one rucksack which was then put in a secured luggage locker for the journey ............... along with all the kitbags the markers were removed from !?!?!?!
No issues on the return journey.
