Sorry, I didn't make myself clear.

I dont care whether or not someone buys a ticket. What bothers me is the justification. Admit your doing something wrong, don't wrap it up in bull****.

For me its a wider indicator of societies attitudes. Im just curious as to whether I'm in a minority or not.

Dishonest appropriation of property or services with intent to permanently deprive the lawful owner of it (or in the case of services - without intent to pay) = theft = arrestable offence = scumbag.

You're totally right, Mario.

Im with JamesJG and Mario. When I work in London I have to spend £409+ for a months ticket. Thats a sizeable amount of money but Im using the service so I have to pay for it. Someone who deliberately fare dodges isn't just stealing from the rail company but they are stealing from me as well as them not paying causes the rail company to push their prices up (well that and the greedy ******* Directors wanting bigger and bigger bonuses each year) which means I have to pay for using the service.

You're right in your opinion Mario but you might want to look up the word "tact" in the dictionary for next time though ;)

I used to do this on the East Coast line all the time in the 90's when I was in college at Newcastle, I would always have money for a ticket but if no one asked I wouldn't buy one, or I'd buy one for the first part of the journey and stay on till my destination... can't say I ever did or would lose any sleep over it.

If you catch the later trains and the guards can't be arsed doing there jobs then sod them , more beer money for me.

On an aside , If you got the train from Edinburgh to Dunbar it cost about £9 ,if you then bought a ticket from Dunbar to Newcastle it cost around £15 ,however if you bought a ticket from Edinburgh to Newcastle it cost over £30 ,when I pointed this out to a guard he just looked at me and said ...'yeh but you cant do that', but without much conviction ..

I always looked on it as a kind of game.

When you check their prices, I am not sure who is a thief ? The guy who doesn't pay, or the train company charging horrendous prices ?

I don't defend the guy not paying. You use something, you should pay for it; else don't use it.

Err, they're a profit making organisation. Much like car insurance companies. They can charge however much they like.
True, but like car insurance; it's a piss-take....

They know there is no much alternatives, and are laughing about it, charging a lot more .....

Agreed.

And the fact that you can get some tickets ridiculously cheap if you have forethought (and serious digging skills) highlights just how much they get away with charging.

For example, I got to Portsmouth from Birmingham for £8 - including the underground ticket for the London portion. The cost just from London to Portsmouth was around the £20 mark alone.

And I only had my ticket checked once in the whole 5 hour, 3 train, journey - excluding the underground barriers. Go figure.

But, in the end of the day, they're a private company providing a service that has very few alternatives - they can charge whatever they think up
:)
