A lot of people come here because they go to their first walk on, ask people what gear to buy and people tell them to come and look on here rather than buying new. Since they are likely to be newbies they are probably nervous about posting in the discussion side of it since they probably think that they don't know enough.
I suspect the buy thread is what tempts most people in in the first place and if you put restrictions on posting there they'd probably think "sod it".

I've been registering on a few air gun forums recently solely to hunt for markers, I'll not be make any useful posts on them since my air rifle has been in the loft for the last 18 years so I can't really contribute, one of them required a couple of posts before you could veiw the buy/sell and I ended up saying "I'm just here to find markers" in one and making some inane comment that contributed nothing on the other - if we force minimum posts then we'll get clogged up with nonsense, if we force a waiting period people will forget they signed up.

How about making it so anyone can view & post on a for sale thread but you have to be platinum at least to create a new for sale thread? So it would be more of a loyalty perk like the email system

This is exactly what i thought when i first joined these forums. I felt like too much of a small timer to post my opinion whenever you were deep in debates or talking general rubbish :D now nobody can stop me (apart from mods obviously :p)

whenever i see someone selling something with 0 posts, i tend to ignore it anyway, cba with the hassle of potentially being scammed
