Forumla 5's FTFW.
The best day's paintball I can remember...
I joined some members of the GWC, Smoking Aces and other randoms at the request of Darky and embarked on a 4 hour drive to give this format a try after nearly a year break due to burn out/boredom.
Ive played my share of 5 man, 7 man, XBall and Woodsball and this format topped it all for me, hands down.
The fast turnaround and way the game is played is just downright f*****g exhilarating.
Gone are the days of sitting back and relying on playing tighter than the other team. I mean, lets be honest..... why did we even have a flag in 5 man? How many times did any of you see the flag run in with any opposing players left in the game?
Gone is the doubt of running for the 50 line on the break... mistakes and gutsy moves no longer have the consequence of leaving your team a man down and costing you the game. The format pays dividends to people making moves and getting up the field...
But if you are a back man who likes shooting his gun the format still requires people to lock lanes down and do their bit... I mean, hell you might even end up on the 50 behind a big bunker shooting 17bps pushing their team further and further back... I remember seeing several of our bigger guys who were good on their guns way further up the field than they normally would be. DARK WARRIOR IS IN THE SNAKE?!
The physical toll is brutal... I put in a fair bit of gym time but I was still totally knackered by the end of the day and during each game. Most teams started tiring towards the 10 minute mark... struggling to get people out during the turnaround but it all adds to the excitement.
I remember in our last game... lungs burning... loosing the game by quite a margin and running out the deadbox like a madman screaming down the middle of the field to hit the buzzer and recoup a few points. What other format of paintball would you see **** like that go down?
The game is exciting but there are some flaws that need ironing out...
1. Im not a fan of people shooting 17bps or whatever they want. 10 or 12 fixed ramp or semi would be better... but thats just my opinion.
2. When teams were signinficantly different in skill level the game could deteriorate to the point of a team getting pinned in their own deadbox... one team actually gave up because they were getting mowed as soon as they ran out. Im not sure how to get around this... or whether it should be left as being a part of the game. I felt in one of our games we were getting pushed further and further back... but we managed to make the ground back by comming out of the deadbox and getting as far up the field as possible... albeit with some daft moves. Another way around it would be to move the team zone line further up the field... so if a team got pinned back that far they would have more bunkers available to break out to?
Thats all I can think of for now...
Im still reeling from how good a day I had.
Thanks to the organisers...
Thanks to all the other teams for turning up...
Thanks to my team, most of who I hadnt met before...
Guys... this is worth the hype. You need to let XBall go... it was designed for TV. 5 man? Dont even get me started on 5 man.
Give this a try... il bet any of you some cash you will agree with me and never look back!
