On and off since about January I've been putting together a player identification system, and it goes live today. Basic idea is every player gets an ID number, and once you have one, you just use that to register for events. The system keeps track of your information, the events you play, and makes sure rosters are valid according to each promoter's criteria.
The days where you have to fill out an information form and a paper roster for each team are over - hit the website, enter in the player ID #'s for the people on your team, and you're done. No more playing tournaments as "Richard Hertz" one year and "Mickey Mouse" the next year either, or claims from promoters that "player eligibility is verified" when all they have to verify eligibility against is a stack of illegible entry forms from previous years.
The first league to use the system is Paintball Sports Promotions. Starting with Chicago Open, every player must get an APPA ID to play and every team must register through the system. Starting with either the Phildelphia event or World Cup, players will also be required to get APPA photo ID's.
How much does it cost?
Getting an ID number is free. If promoters want to use government ID or their own IDs to check player identity against team rosters, they can. APPA photo ID's will be $15 from APPA, which you can use in any league using the APPA system and in leagues where APPA ID's are required. Additionally, some promoters may offer APPA ID's at lower costs - PSP will be providing APPA ID's to players at their events for free if/when they become required.
Also, if you do get an APPA ID Card (by paying $15 to get one direct or through a league you play) you also get $15 off full APPA memership (when the organization goes live) and a FREE SPPLAT membership (except the T-Shirt).
Currently, the ID System also provides events with dynamic team lists and notification of payment processing - you'll see this immediately with the PSP event. When you register, your team is automatically added to the PSP team list, and linked to your team web page, if provided. Once the promoter accepts your payment, your team's payment status is automatically changed from "payment pending" to "paid" on the team list.
Down the road we should be adding player and team profiles similar to the ones for the college league ( www.college-paintball.com/cgi-bin/teamprofile/showteam.cgi ) and push-button scheduling for promoters.
PSP should be switching out their registration page today, but in the meantime you can sign up for a player ID at https://pulsar.powweb.com:11188/cgi-bin/newplayer.cgi
and register for the Chicago Open at https://pulsar.powweb.com:11188/cgi-bin/register.cgi. Both pages use 128-bit SSL encryption.
I've attempted to anticipate a few player questions ( www.paintball-players.org/PSPFAQ.html ) but I'm sure there's stuff I've missed so if you've got any questions, put them up here and I'll answer them and/or get them added to the FAQ's.
You'll note that this is an ID system with some enforcement teeth - if you get busted trying to work around it, you don't play any events using the ID system for a year. At Chicago Open, there will be people spot-checking rosters during prelims and everyone should be checked for semis and finals.
