(I thought there was a thread here about this already?)

It looks like Laurent is going to come up with a unique field design for X Ball at Campaign Cup. The same design will be used on both the EXL field and the Open X Ball field. Some of the props will be rearranged for the RL v PA game on Thursday evening.

I lean towards releasing the field design on the websites the Monday before the tournament. I think it will be an interesting change to see teams adjust to a field they don't have a chance to practice or play on.

When you arrive on Thursday we'll probably have the Open X Ball field set up with the design that will be used for the tournament and the EXL field set up with the design for the exhibition game.

Steve

PS. To captains of all Campaign Cup X Ball teams: please be sure and plan on attending a short but important X Ball captains' meeting on Thursday before the event. Watch the Millennium and Campaign Cup websites for more info.

This is wrong!
I agree, its also not fair for the people who have bought an X ball field.

I understand that an expectation has been built up about getting field designs early. The NXL have that system and the PSP Division teams get theirs a week or so before the event (notice that Northeast has two Division X Ball fields; How do you handle practice for that?). We've done it that way so far this year but never announced that as a standard condition nor does it say anything in the rules about it.

There have been serious discussions in NXL about not releasing the designs early in order to cut down on the robotics and possible monotony.

We are waiting on the design. If enough of you want the designs earlier rather than later we'll seriously consider it. I've noted Christian's and Matt's opinions.

Interesting subject this...

I understand Steve's motivations about cutting back on the monotony, but on the other hand Xball was supposed to be the true sports face of paintball. And in any sport it makes sense to be able to practice for the game that you will be playing. If you don't know what the field will look like, all you can do is just generic drills, nothing field specific, and so can't work on any crazy moves... Yet at the same time, if you don't give teams the opportunity to play/practice on the fields beforehand, you might see some moves that looked good during fieldwalking, but turn out to be totally stupid, which also fun to watch.
Then there's yet another side of the coin. Is it really that important to adjust the rules for the spectators, since there really aren't any as of yet...

Which is wisdom? I have an opinion, but I ain't gonna say. I'd rather see ya'll discuss this. Enjoy. :D

i think this is wrong also! as the chance to practice the field layout prior to the event is in my mind as important as the event itself!

plus as Matt pointed out those who have an XBall field (or access to one) have basically wasted another proportion of the expense of owning one!

if the layout stays secret till the week of the event, we will either have to have a few more days off work to train on it prior to the event or wait till one of the NXL teams hands us a lesson in whoopa$$ whilst we try and learn the angles and moves etc!

release the field as soon as possible and let the final EXL/Open X be as good as the rest of the season (excluding Paris of course!)

OK, your vote has been registered and is being considered but I think "wrong" is the wrong adjective to use. We never implied at the start of the season that we would send out field designs before the events. And (Jay) there is no adjustment in the rules as there's nothing in the rules about this. In fact, I don't know how you all in Open X Ball have managed to get the designs since I don't have your e-mail addresses. I guess you get them when I post them here.

The main reason I'm not using the Northeast tourney design is because I don't want the NXL teams to have the serious advantage of having played a tournament on that field while all the other teams, at best, have only been able to practice on it.

So, are there other Open X Ball or EXL teams who want us to release the field design as soon as we get it?

We're listening.

Hi again Steve.

I already understood there is no rule on when to release the field design, but don't you think there should be, whether it's release it X amount of weeks prior to the event, or just a few days before? Always a good thing to have a protocol for such things, as it stops people from asking prematurely, and prevents a lot of nagging.

And I think most open X teams will have very little problem getting the designs as soon as the EXL teams get them. After all, they often serve as sparring partners and most people in open X have a number of buddies in the EXL teams. But that's besides the point.
