as its the weekend...

what are your views on genetic engineering?

this ranges from cloning to engineering of plants and the like?

At the minute im unsure. Vast leaps in the scientific theory and practice could prove to provide miracle cures for many illnesses and diseases.

However it could also take us down a very very dangerous road in which we start to play god more than we are now.

personally i think that full humans should never be cloned. each person is individual and shouldnt be "fashion made" by their parents. however, individual body parts should be grown to save others. if that means growing humans to make them then it shouldnt be allowed, but if it can be done on its own then i give it the thumbs up. will save thousands of lives.

the only other problem with cloning is it could actualy be millitary used. if you think about the star wars clone army could be made, whos gonna stop the U.S if they say they're gonna make clones geneticly enginered for war? i know we wont.......we'd probably join in....

some of genetic engineering is pretty cool, & a vast amount already goes on that isnt talked about, but also isnt dangerous, likely to produce 3 headed babies etc

like, one way they mass-produce insulin from diabetics, they used to take it from pigs pancreas's

...now they get the DNA of an insulin producing gene and insert it into a bacteria...which reproduces and produces insulin

it's very cheap making it widely available for diabetics, no side effects on humans from using pig-insulin any more, & the pis are happy too :)


People with cystic fibrosis are ill basically 'cause they lack this gene which in normal people helps them move chloride ions in & out of cells

now with genetic engineering scientists have got this gene and inserted it into a 'vector' which gets the gene into the body, sometimes this is a virus. One treatment now is a spray containing this gene which they inhale right, then the virus implants itself into the cells in the lungs...and the cells now have that gene in for a while which allows them to move chloride ions which cause the problem and for a while this improves their health :)

so genetic engineering can be cool and it isnt always about cloning and playing god it can be about no-risks to anyone helping people survive an extra 10 years :)

meh they could if by they you mean like...terrorists or something?
but reproducing bacteria isnt genetic engineering really...all they would need is a small culture of the bacteria & the right conditions like a fermentation tank air blower and stuff like that, hell I know how to do it i could do it in my garage :)


anyway....cloning, dont really know if I agree with cloning I dont know everything about it, sounds a bit dodgy to me with all the ethics etc

did you know, some genes for producing some medicines can be injected into a sheep egg, & then the sheep produces it in it's milk?

one eg is alpha 1 antitripsin which is used for cystic fibrosis

again, now really cheap, more available to sick people = good
most times I would say
result > ethics

as long as the animals arent badly misused

but then you have to look at...it has taken many many experiments to get these techniques right. a bit Alien styleee there were a lot of failiures before they got it right :(

personally i think it would be a scientific breakthrough if we did clone a human bein i for 1 would put myself for for it as there would then be 2 sexy barstuards on the planet then wouldnt there hahaha.

no it would be a breakthrough tho as for parts or what not say i needed a leg later on in life id want my clone there to pluck it off or say a kidney ****t up id have a fresh 1 wouldnt i, i mean who wouldnt want to live that little bit longer at the expense of yourself?
