A 'Cocker, or Auto Cocker, to give it its full name...is a converted Pump gun.
Back in the day, the back block, and bolt, were connected to a handle, under the barrel, via the "Pump Arm"....by pulling back on the handle, you pulled the back block back, which moved the bolt backwards, allowing a ball to drop in, and also cocking the firing mechanism inside.

The firing mechanism...consisted of a spring loaded hammer, which...when released by the trigger, went forward, and opened a valve, which then allowed air, through the gun, to push the ball out of the barrel.

The Autococker, was a modification, that removed the pump handle, and automoated the cocking cycle.

This was achieved, by using Pneumatics, on the front: A ram, to push the back block back and forward.
A Low pressure regulator, to control the amount of air, used by the ram...and a 3 way "switch", which was conected to the trigger, via a rod.
When you pull the trigger, the first part of the pull, released the sear, causing the gun to fire...the second part of the pull, switched the air, to the front of the ram..to open the bolt and recock the gun, and as the trigger was released, the air was switched to the back of the ram, to close the bolt again.

This was then automated, by the Electronic grip frames, of the present day, making timing much easier and more reliable.

The Shocker...is a Spool valve type gun...blow forward in design, whereby, the bolt, at rest, is back, breech open...as the gun is fired...a solenoid, allows air to flow to the bolt, pushing the ball into the barrel...then..it flows past the bolt, to shoot the ball...then (i think) surplus air, is used to return the bolt to its original position...mind you...im no expert on spool valves...im sure someone else could describe the process better!
