This is asked pretty frequently on here so you might want to check some older threads for suggestions. Let me sum up what you'll probably hear the most...

1. Try some different markers out before you buy anything, so you have a feel for the different markers. Keep in mind the position you play on the field and your style of play (fast and aggressive or backfield paint-spewer).

2. Cockers, angels, impulses, matrixes (or matrices :p ), timmies all have their good and bad points, as well as their rabid fans. They all shoot paintballs, they all shoot fast and they'll all basically do the job for you, but you may find one more comfortable/easier to shoot than the others.

3. Think about a used or second-hand marker. You can get more marker for your money buying used.

4. Talk to your local field or store to see what they markers they carry. They're usually a good source of information.

5. There are a ton of online resources (like P8ntballer.com ;) ) to check for marker reviews, tech guides and help with questions you may have about a particular marker (for example, the Impulse Owners Group is great for questions about the Impulse).

Finally, don't forget the other stuff you'll need - air system, goggles, pack, etc. Don't blow all your money on a high-end marker and have nothing left for the rest of your kit.

Too bad you aren't across the pond, a teammate of mine is selling a spare LCD Angel (tank, gun, 2 barrels) for $600.00.
Other than the fact that I can't shoot an Angel (they don't like me, I don't like them) and that I love my Timmy, and I'd love my STO more if it was E-bladed, Shamu pretty much covered all the bases. Alot of times, if you can test it before you buy it, a used tourney gun is a great deal. It's already setup, dialed in, and broken it. If you have cash left over, I'd take it into a shop after a month of owning it and have them take it apart and make some recommendations as to what to replace/tune up. I'd wait a month 'cause sometimes those grease monkeys decide that they want to tweak something and they end up screwing things up even more, so play with the gun and get used to it before letting anyone else mess with it. If you're lucky, the most that will be done is a lube job and O-ring replacement.
The Impulse seems pretty nice if you make a few mods to prevent shoot-down, but I'd get it with the eye...pretty much anything I'd get would need an eye 'cause I'm always doing bad things to my body (gravity check!) and my gun always ends up bouncing around or occasionally outrunning my hopper.
