What equipment to buy to get started.

Proto SLG or Invert Mini
68 inch (or smaller if you which) 4500 PSI carbon fibre tank
Rotor or Prophecy.. i know its pricey to start off , but its better in the long run. However it is acceptable to buy a halo reloader/ invert too these are a little bigger and worse however i started with one, and they work just fine...
Your mask really makes a difference. I would recommend the Dye i3 pro's or The Proto axis' Both of these are basically the same, but hte proto is newer so is a little better. Either of those will give you a solid base on what kind of mask you would like, or stick with those. For example if you dont like them, which is unlikely, jsut tell someone what you dont like about it. for example too heavy and people will tell you what to buy to change that.
For Kit, depending on where you think you will be playing dress accordingly, For example on hte speedball pitch you can just go nuts with your colours as its not really worth wearing red and blue jsut to fit in
But in the woods it can be worth it to go the extra mile and go with some form of camo, for example the planet eclipse camo gear, or the Dye camo gear.
If you buy all that, and turn up at a walk on or training day, you wil fit in like a paintball in a hopper.
Keep in mind, paintball is pricey and dont feel bad getting stuff second hand. All of my gear is second hand, and its still all working

I'm not sure yet but I'd like to do both, but I would say more woodsball, also haunt decided on a budget, I want to buy something that I won't hav to change after a while

I would recommend buying a cheap Jersey and Playing Pants from here (Sale section)
And I would suggest buying a mask new but its not a massive loss buying from here as long as the condition is good.
I got a pair of 2009 "Empire E- Vents" (Mask) from www.bzpaintball.co.uk for £40, which was an excellent investment, however if you have never played many rental days and arn`t used to the pain of getting hit on the side of the face/ neck I would suggest Proto Axis as they are slightly bigger and actually a little more comfortable.
Thats just a few tips, there is a few more bits you need but think everyone else has covered all that.

Halo B's are good hoppers, they're more than fast enough for use even today. However, they're a bit battery hungry and if you're considering getting one used ask the seller how many cases of paint have gone through it. Because if its seen a lot of use, say 30-40 boxes than the motor inside is probably beginning to ware out and will need replacing.
I'd say go for the Invert Too, you can get it new and it'll still perform really well.

For reliability your probably best off getting an eclipse gun, maybe an etek 2 used (£250), bottle you would be better getting a carbon fiber tank (£150-£180 new. (£75-£100 used depending on test date) but a steelie is fine for woods ball, hopper your best taking every one elses advice.
As for playing gear the valken fate series from just paitball is good for begginers and not to expensive. Mask you should get the best you can afford, I4s are top of the range, proto axis, I3s and V-force Grillz are good aswell.
