Just looking to canvass a bit of opinion on this.

What barrels have you used on your/a mag before
and what did you find worked out the best for you.
Coupled to this, what position did/do you play in?

Currently got the standard armson 9-10 inch job
and a rather nice 12 inch smart parts (old style).
Was wondering about getting a longer one to try out, but thought I'd ask for all your wealth of experience before I go spending the banks money :)

Ive used armson smart parts and dac tulip on a mag the only down side is that it depends on the size of the ball at the end of the day so any of the barrels that have inserts ie freak or replacement backs with different bore sizes or they way to go, as for barrel length i would say that the longer the barrel the more drag on the paintball also the velocity of the gun will ave to be turned up slightly to accomadate the extra length, i play back and use a 12' freak and ave tried longer barrels just seem to get in the way. One of the reasons for using longer barrels is to help push the barricade on sup air alittle to keep tighter, ave you got an air system for your mag cos ive got 2 3000psi flatlines for sale if your interested

would love an air system for the mag (it's on Co2) at the moment, but I simply can't afford one, but thanks for the offer. Now that isn't an excuse to start posting cheap air systems *wags finger at other ballers* I still want your barrel comments.

Cheers WKD,

hiya,
as somone said already its all down to the paint size
id aim at getting yourself a couple one with a larger bore than the other.....so if you are chopping paint then you can swap........

personally i have a jacko barrel, my favourite, 14incher very nice and ive never had any probs with it (had it since they were first released about 6? years ago)
for smaller paint i have a boomstick 16incher, also very nice and damn accurate with the right paint

ive never owned a mag, but i was chatting to a mag owner recently and he swears by the old ceramik barrels, have a look what people have around theres bound to be loads about for little cash...also give planet a ring, they usually have a stash of 2nd hand barrels kicking about

ok ok ok

before this goes too far.

Thanks for the help everyone is giving, BUT:

I want to know what about your experience with barrels, lengths esp but bore seems to be jsut as important.

Is very easy to get a range of barrels and backs such as the freak. However I'm on a bit of a budget so would value your experiences. Then I can look at getting another barrel to complement the two I have already.

Which are 9-10 " standard armson
12 " smartparts (old style).

See Jahlad's post for what I mean. And thanks for the ideas for where to look for barrels. But right now I would like your thoughts and experiences...

Cheers

Mag Barrels

For barrels if you can't afford a freak which is undoubtedly the greatest tube ever! (especially with a boomstick style front - www.whitewolfairsmithing.com)

I'd suggest the old style teardrop from smart parts. They were knocking them out for a tenner in their sale section, and I believe they have a few left. This is a great basic tube!

Other than that the Dye Excel is now availiable for the Mag. I had one of these on my inferno and they are fantastic for the money!

As for length a mag needs four inches to excellerate a ball to 300 FPS so they run fine on a ten. I only ever use a ten or a twelve.

ChairChimp - you said what lengths/makes your current barrels are, but if you're looking to get a third one to complement them then the bore size is more important. If both your existing barrels are large bore (which most "stock" barrels tend to be) then you should be looking for one with a slightly smaller bore to get a better paint/bore match.
Personally I found the DAC tulip my favorite for Mags.

Back when I had a Mag, I got awesome results with Lapco and CP barrels which both had the added perk of being cheap as well as extremely effective. Both of them shoot themselves clean: Lapco clears a break 100% in a single shot, no squeegee needed.

An interesting multi bore system just came out at MGO that you might love called the Hammerhead. It works a lot like the OTP dream series barrel, but constructed out of tougher than usual aluminum for the main section while the sizers are crafted from extremely tough aviation grade steel (the type used in the F-14's landing gear!). They come in 7, 9.5, and 12 inch lengths to my knowledge...more sizes perhaps coming later.
