Cheers to jesus and shelley on the Ton Ton thread for your support.
Like MikeyD said on the thread, one of the worst kept secrets out there! its been a kinda on–off-on again thing outwith our control as other “players” have positioned themselves over the past few months.
Suffice to say were now stoked to be asked by Smart Parts to represent them in this slot and have been working specifically for it for the past 3 months. We fully intend to step up to the plate on behalf of the UK and our sponsors and give it our absolute best shot.
Before I go any further I would like to say my thoughts go out to the Kellys guys who worked so hard for so long to get so far, yet I understand are now forced to call it a day, for reasons genuinely unknown to me or anyone involved with Warped. Its sad to see that this can happen to one of the most successful and popular teams so quickly, surely not a good testament to the game? Anyway, we will never forget screaming for you guys to win and I for one am sad to see you go. Im sure its scant consolation but at least it’s a UK team playing the slot.
The Warped SPL team is basically a development of the most promising guys involved in the Wolf City Union setup around Warped in Wolverhampton.
WCU has around 20 players in 3 squads playing domestically at various levels in the UK Masters, Masters X-ball Lite, and the PA. Over the past 12-18 months a small group of guys have emerged who have the youth, commitment, and determination to at least have a go at a career in paintball.
Warped (the company) tries to employ and develop employees who show long term commitment and drive for the game - of the 6 player initial SPL roster 5 are currently employed by warped (3 full time). Customers from the warped club, the shop, warpedonline, and the Big Game are I guess the best judge of whether these guys have the best interest of the UK game at heart – if you deal with warped you will know at least one of them.
So when SP asked if we were interested in the slot we, as a company decided to give it a go and at least try and repay their confidence, and develop our commited guys, by sticking our hand in our pockets to help finance the series for the team. With the grateful (and hopefully intuitive!) help of Smart Parts, Tomahawk Paintballs, and JCS Sport and the players themselves, the resources are in place to concentrate on virtually full time training and competing for this season.
Can we cut it? Well training and playing exclusively as a group since the end of last season - rather than split up playing at various levels in various team setups in the WCU squad - has had a very positive effect on this “new” team, the guys really have worked their butts off to improve skills in every department, and to gel as a team.
We will require of course to add to the roster and have had training sessions, and/or discussions with players with CPL/SPL experience, and have a couple of meetings arranged with players suggested via sponsors – and of course are ALWAYS keeping an eye on any up and coming UK players we notice, and continue to develop the WCU squad as a “feeder” team.
We have our final training session before Malaga tomorrow and who know what that will bring – apart of course from two French teams and one Russian!
Anyway the guys are focused and ready to go, hopefully we will enjoy ourselves whatever happens and get some kind of base going to build on for the rest of the season.
I understand that there will be more than a few doubters out there, but I hope that those who know me, and the others involved will be waiting at least until after Malaga to judge whether we are indeed "Mad or have too much money”
