After recent postings asking about which types of marker are 'best' and a whole load of help explaining that it depends on what you want.

I thought I might ask a question that could possibly have a few of you thinking. (apologies in advance)

Still busy browsing around the place looking at lots of different markers, but I was curious to know if there was a general opinion, not on the better types of markers, but on the best value for money.

Now this could easily be as vague as earlier questions, but I want a marker that I can mod to a half decent tourney standard should I require it, but should be a good rec-ball gun right out of the box/shop essentially.

Making any sense here? Probably not, but there ya go. I don't specifically have a budget limit, but I don't want to pay over the odds for a marker that does exactly what I need, when there are better value brands or individual markers out there, it is only a first buy after all.

The angel can be bought in the new year.

I like mags. The old classic/powerfeeds are getting on a bit, not considered "fashionable" and available at silly prices second hand.

They hardly ever break, and the customer service is second-to-none, whether your mag is new or second- or third-hand. Works as well as just about every other semi for rec-ball, and nearly all the latest upgrades to turn the marker into a tourney competition level one can be retro-fitted to the earlier models.

I suppose you could say a similar thing for cockers - upgradeable from a sniper pump to a modern autocker.

Id second the cocker motion (not that there is anything wrong with mags).
They are accurate, and tourney and recball capable out of the box.
there are absoultley tons of after market upgrades, to tweek it into what every you want it to be.
New, they are reliable, and functional out of the box.
2nd hand - this is more risky with cockers than most. But give the marker a test game or two before comitting to buying it.
cockers can cost anything from £150 - £1500 its all down to your budget, and needs.

Go for a standad impulse, a great gun thats Tourney grade and with Co2 you can use it at most rec sites too. A bargain at around £350..

I second the impulse idea, even though I shoot a cocker:D :D . the three things you need to make it a top class marker, an electro loader, hpa tank, I like the 45ci 4500psi or the 68 4500, and an I frame. thats a hell of alot cheeper than an angel!

hope this helps.

Value for money is a curious thing. You might think that going out and buying the IR3 knowing you'll not have to upgrade or replace it for tourney use is good value for money.

Personally I'd say cocker, but then that's all I've used for about 9 years. Trouble with cockers, (and most "betokeners :D), is there's always a new shiny bit that you just HAVE to add to it. In fact you can end up spending more on new shiny bits that you did on the marker and in total far more than you would have wanted to have spent in the first place.

My advice, and I know it's been said before go and ask the experts. You're in Manchester so you're in luck, you've got Planet just down the road. Go and talk to them. Tell them what you want, explain everything that you've explained here and get them to talk you through the different products. Get your hands on them, try out the triggers, balance, weight etc.

They will not rip you off, the guys behind the counter at Planet are top bods and will sort you out. (Though watch out for Dan he's too good a salesman, either that or I'm just a mug for stuff he places into my grubby hands!)

If you can't decide even then, or like stuff but want to go second hand then look here, there's always bargains to be had even on the top of the range stuff.

Hope this helps

um, i have a tippmann model 98 custom, and it's practically indestructible, but you'll want a new barrel, as the stock one's crap. i drool over the spyder E-99, but don't know how good it does 'in the field'. i can get the E-99 for about $200, and the model 98 for $130, but don't know how the prices are in the UK, so i'm not much use. sorry:rolleyes:
