ok,
this is totally not my idea, someone mentioned it in passing. however...

how about entering a uni all stars team (we need to come up with a better name...maybe just university.. or university barbarians.. a total rip on the barbarians rugby team formed out of random players, but a cool name.) as many players as want to from each uni team would enter into one team, this team would play as many events as is possible throught the uk. this would mean that potentially the uk universities would be represented at many events further rasing our profile.

perhaps it could work as a rotating roster, say we get 10 peole interested from various unis. we create a roster and send out dates of events that we could enter, if we get the required number of people to enter the competition then we go for it. this way we aviod the hastle of having to organise ten people from one uni, or five people, which is difficult at best with conflicting exam, monetariy and social schedules. it means individuals who have the time free could go and play. it could be cetrally run by comittee. tbh, with mobile phones, msn and the like it wont be that hard.

thoughts??

I have thought about this before. But there would be a lot more admin involved than you think, and I'm not really sure it would be worth the hassle for domestic events. Once the teams have been playing the uni league I doubt they will have that much difficultly getting enough of their own players together. And if they are short a player or two they could just pick up a guest from another uni on a casual basis like a lot of non-university teams do at the moment.

What it would be fun for, would be to do international events. I doubt that all the universities would be able to field teams at the Millenniums over the summer, so organsiing joint teams for big events like that would be fun. We could even fly out to one of the PSP events and play some Xball. A tour of university clubs in the US would be fun - going round visiting different teams and playing them.

For these it might perhaps be an idea to get together for a training camp before heading to the event. A couple of days training together before heading off.

i think it would work, and it certianly wouldnt hurt too much to try...surley?

yeah, i admit the admin may be a bit of a ****ter. but i do see it having some benifits. A it would mean that the unis are at some events. B i think i could raise our profile. i dont envisage the uni team trawling the world, and i think domestic events is what this sort of team should be aimed at.

certainly i could see that team training would be very difficult. i love the inter uni, and i dont want to detract from that, but i really think this could work if done properly and provide some benifits.

the way i think it could be run is each member of the team is given a list of potential games, they either say yes or no. if we have enough members to enter the tournie then we go for it, if we dont then we leave it and move on. each member would use their own kit, organise their own transport and pay a percentage of the entrance fee (your admin is your admin). a simple playing jersey could be organised...say a black longsleeve tshirt. (primark for less than a fiver)

anywho, in true paintballer style i feel this may degenerate into a mass of disorganisation and talking without actually achiving much (no offence intended steve that is not aimed at you. i just want to see if this can be done) So, if you are potentially interested in an all stars university team please either pm me, or put your name below.

from this i will try to create a team roster. if no one is interested i will leave it and return to my box.

the way i would like to run it i dont envisage it detracting form inter uni. peoples affiliation will still be with their uni, i envisage this adding to it.

exactly. so its a come as you please idea (i am in total mong mode at the minute...need to explain myself better)

basically how it would work is:

you would express and interest in becoming a member of the team. (there would be no cost btw)
I or whoever is incharge would add your name to an email list.
everyone on that list would be emailed when an event is coming up.
they would reply with a yeay or nay.
if we had enough people we would further organise the mechanics of getting there, team entry and so on.
if not we would move on.

members of the team would email back to the person incharge, or possibly via an internet site what events they would like to enter.

so for example, bill at the university of scumthorp wants to enter a team into the uk masters, 5 people are neede for a team.. he would email the organisor or post up on the website that he wanted to enter a team. the administrator would then email everyone on the roster. the first 5 replies would be admited to the team. (with an extra 2 or so being told they could come as reserves??)

those 5 people that make up the team would then organise among themselves all the details of entry and transport aswell as a place to meet up before the tournie. in this way 1 player from aberdeen could play with 3 from manchester and 1 from pompey. perhaps even an own gunner at a uni who doesnt have a uni team could be accepted? i might have to work out that last point.

Sounds a good idea, admin wise, your at uni so peeps love to be secretaries in clubs, just offer lots of beer!

Why not name it BUSA United (British University's Sports Association), and get some backing? :D

not sure i like that name. i was going to go with university barbarians, a total rip on the rugby team and what they are. but the name has university in it, BUSA is a bit odd. if its university there is no ambiguity. you know what this team is, and what it is made up of.

so come on? anyone interested in this idea?

No probs whitey, can't hurt to give it a go - and it could be fun. As well as having an email list you could also post up a thread in the Uni forums (when they are up). I suspect that would be another good way of getting players for a uni scratch team at short notice.

I think we might annoy busa if we use their name without permission though, and gaining permission would not be a simple matter unfortunatley. 'Campus Commandos' would be my vote. :p
