Rec-ball (recreational paintball) is what most people play, bascically just for fun. They play ever weekend at a local site, usually in the woods and have a good time.

Blisterball was the name given to the first single flag games, something i learnt after reading an article in PGI

Skyball is a paintball tournament event held at the Skyball sports arena in Toronto, Canada.

You have as good or better facilities in the UK as we do here. Check out Sparklie's site and Temple as good examples. Rec-ball means different things to different people, but a good definition of that is ball played with persons of 2 years' experience or less, learning the game and not taking it too seriously. There is what I think of as practice ball, which is serious players playing games with their squads against other organized squads which often play in tournaments versus each other. You want to get in on such as soon as you are ready for it. Play some rec games and see who is worth playing with (i.e. no whining babies, cowards, do-nothings, $2000 gun and 20 seconds' experience posers, etc.), see if you can coordinate days of play with them, and grow! Get yourself in the right setting and mindset, plan, learn, and dominate. Don't get stuck in the go-nowhere scene that plagues a lot of rec people.

Onion, I'm pretty certain that I'll never play rec. ever again, I don't enjoy it at all. I hate getting beat up for no reason, and that's basically how I view it. You know what though, that's MY OPINION. There are people out there who enjoy playing rec. It's laid back, no pressure to win every friggin' time you go out, etc. There are people who ENJOY that. It's a narrow-minded and elitist view, claiming that people who play rec. for over two years are part of a, "go nowhere scene." Onion, tourney play is just one branch on the paintball tree. Are you against recreational softball leagues also? Those guys aren't goin' anywhere, they're playin' freakin' SOFTBALL for cryin' out loud! Open your mind my friend.

Well, as stated by Onion, Rec-ball means different things to different people. I think most of the people that I play with would be offended by his definition, because most of the group I play with have over 10 years apiece. I would venture to say that our definition of Rec-Ball would be something simple like....informal non-tourney paintball played by 2 opposing sides with different games such as elimination, single flag, double flag and so on.

Played on privately owned land with tougher saftey rules than any public paintball site that I have been to, in my less than 2 years experience.

there's also big game and outlaw (differing kinds of rec ball)

big game is what it sounds like. usually scenario games involving hundreds if not thousands of players.

outlaw (or bandit or backyard ball) is guys who can't or don't go to fields and play on wooded land unsanctioned. hopefully they play on land owned by one of the players and enough out of the way that no unsuspecting people will wander into the middle of the game. this type of ball is usually frowned upon more and more as paintball grows. usually because outlawers are sometimes a bit more socially deviant or don't follow proper safety rules (i.e. approved masks and barel plugs and gun safeties).
i play a lot of outlaw at a friends land. it fine for me due to lack of funds for fields. me and my friends ar kind of antisocial so this suits as just fine. but we play responsibly and safely. actually a bit safer than some fields i've been on.

but this winter i will prbably frequent the indoor place more and more as the weather gets cold.
