Toulouse reffing

I started out the event thinking the refs on the CPL and SPL fields were doing an excellent job.

They were mobile, they were positioned well, they were proactive, they rarely let stuff slide, the head refs were courteous to players and always had a sensible explanation for calls made.... all in all the best reffing I have ever seen in paintball.

But, as the weekend progressed, it got out of hand in a major way.

The refs simply got completely overzealous, and started making calls that were downright ridiculous.

For instance, I was watching Solid play a game:

Their snake player goes for the snake straight off the break, and while sliding into it, he receives a hit to his pack.

Upon completing his slide, he lies still and starts calling for the ref to check him.... he in no way plays actively, he just lies there and waits for the check.

Ref goes in, grabs his pack, sees the hit... and goes "out".

While the player stands up, puts his hand on the head, and starts to leave the field - the ref proceeds to run across the field, screaming "3 for 1" - and pulling 3 other players.

That is just crazy!

I saw about 30 instances, where players dove into a bunker and immidiately asked for a check, while not actively playing and waiting for the ref to perform the check - only to be called out and see a 141 being called.... and that is just what I saw myself.

It totally destroys the game for us players, when you do your utmost not to cheat, to avoid penalties for your team, and then end up being penalised.

If it continues, the effect will be that players stop asking for checks and simply continue playing, because they are getting penalised regardless!

I am fully aware that we players are obligated to check ourselves, and should not ask for checks when we know we are hit... but in an X-Ball format, when you are tight in a bunker, with streams of paint coming in on both sides of you, you don't start flopping around and mess with checking yourself, when you know it will get you shot... you ask for the ref to check you, and expects to ONLY be called out, if you are in fact hit.

The "self check zone" HAS to be dependent on your situation and position... a player should NOT be expected to get himself eliminated, trying to ascertain if a ball broke or bounced!

I hope Ulrich and the head refs will get this sorted out for Germany, because if it continues like in Toulouse, you guys will actually be promoting cheating - instead of the opposite.... refs should be there to make the game fair... not to force players into situations where they will prefer cheating.

100% true!

Getting 1-4-1's for turning the gun to see If you got shot at your loader is crap. 1-4-1's for calling refs because you are not sure if a hit broke on your back or not is crap. 1-4-1's for asking "what?" or "why" when you get pulled without a hit is majorcrap! I have seen so many refs doing the 1-4-1 signal BEHIND penalized players and then pulling another 1-4-1 'cause the players were asking "why"!

IMO it turned to a 1-4-1 massacre more than a strict reffing...

I am especially impressed with how many times i saw the refs point out a player, not complete it and instead letting them stay in the game.

There was also loads of examples where the player puts his hand on his head and then suddenly start to play again because of bounces or whatever reasons. And the refs let it happend.

Yeah i saw that happen, but appart from some mistakes i liked the reffing,it was impartial and good, im speaking of Chronic, Tomahawk and Dye fields.

Totally agree. If you going to be eliminated and/or 1-4-1 for calling the ref for a check then you may as well play-on with a hit the outcome is the same. This is a stupid rule ans something should definitely be done about soon. Dave Stewart

Refs seemed to be very slow on the Division 1 fields, I actually heard an english ref complaining to the head ref on the chronic field about the other refs being too slow to check players so it wasn't just me that noticed it.

I don't think refs know how to rub players down anymore, an example would be - I'm in the snake, I shoot back centre player in the back he then turns and shoots me..and he gets 1for1 for it but I still get pulled. I noticed it quite a few times over the weekend.

oh yeah. and then there was the dead mans walk on one of the 7man fields..
One team doing it was called acyd. The last player would get up as if shot, doing the gay wave and slowly walk looking back. then just turn and blaze. He got one of our players doing it. The rest of us lit him up tho. We learnt our lesson tho.

No hand on head? Commence shooty shooty.

They did this more than once. And we saw it work on one of the games too. the 'walker' (change the L to an N if you like) won a 2 on 1.

yes it was the acyd player i saw.

I saw the game where it worked. But since hes indicating that he is shot (clearly, by waving and yelling merde whilst jumping and walking to the deadbox), he shouldnt be allowed doing that. Correct me if im wrong but im pretty sure that is what it says in the rulebook. you dont have to put your hand on your head to signal that youre out.

So you still can get overshooting penalities even if they do not have their hand on their head.

Millennium Rulebook said:
28.10 Players that are eliminated, immediately upon their elimination, shall:
1.Signal their elimination by puting one hand onto their head as long as the player is not in the deadbox
Hmmm :D

No hand on head? Commence shooty shooty.
i would've thought so..;)
