Just been advised this by my Biz travel department, major blow for the all the big kit bag fans! :D :D

RESTRICTIONS TO WEIGHT OF CHECKED BAGGAGE

With effect from 1st June 2004 BAA is introducing new guidelines aimed at restricting the weight of checked baggage at the UK airports that they operate.

From this date all baggage over 23 kilogrammes will be required to be tagged as a ‘heavy’ bag and the actual bag weight shown clearly on the tag.

Bags weighing more than 32 kilogrammes will have to be repacked, unless prior arrangements have been made for the handling of specialised baggage (e.g. film crew camera equipment). Individual bags weighing more than 32 kilogrammes will NOT be accepted by any airline.

Weighing Scales are to be provided in all terminals to enable passengers to check the weight of their baggage.

Interim arrangements are being developed to assist passengers to repack overweight bags and will include a repacking area within each terminal and the provision of boxes and labels.

After a settling in period the check in belts will be reconfigured to ensure that no overweight bags can proceed into the baggage system.

It is a good idea to mention to passengers, especially those with SCAX that these restrictions will commence on 1st June 2004.

Nothing new in that annoucement, Transatlantic flights have always had these restrictions. In fact not that many years ago 35 kilo's per bag was the upper limit but this is now reduced to 32 kilo's...though this only applies on Scheduled Filghts, Charter flights even if Transatlantic are often limited to 1 bag @ 23 kilos.
So now 2 bags each at a max of 32 kilos and hand luggage of 5 kilo's for Scheduled transatlantic flights, Charter can be the same but read the restrictions when you book.
European flights are a whole different thing so in general terms treat every flight as a Charter but check as to if you can take 1 or 2 bags plus hand luggage. Camera and Camcorder cases are generally allowed in addition to your hand luggage but check when you book.
Something to note that if you go on a holiday/paintball trip or whatever you often can get all the things you buy back as excess baggage for an extra cost (no surprise there) However the charge for excess baggage is often a lot lower than shipping your extra goodies home as a parcel. I was quoted $120cdn to ship a box @ 25 kilo's home from 2 courier firms and the post office but called the airline and got an extra bag that was allowed to be 32 kilos home for $75cdn...so I went and did some more shopping ;)
