Thread Saver?

Will anyone tell me what a thread saver is?

If you have a screw in nitrogen tank or a co2 tank, you use a thread saver to cover the threads to keep them from getting burrs or nicks on them or getting bent as to make them not useable. I think most screw in nitro tanks come with a plastic one.
