i want to play 5man tourney ball this year and be competetive. i have two 5man teams wanting me to tryout for them. both would most likely be out of my budget limit and one is most likely out of my league. the other one wants me to play with them a couple times in march and go to the ultimate madness 3. they are a sponsored team and from there they will decide if they want me on there team and i will have to sign a contract and will have to purchase some new equipment but for cheap. sounds good to me but they arent' playing localy, they are going to events like chicago open and iao which i would love to do, but im' not so sure i can fit that in my budget this year. so that leaves me thinking about starting my own team. i have 2 guys an hour away and 2 guys 2 hours away, and i could grab 3 of my buddies from the team i was on last year. the guys 2 hours away say they can come twice a month to practice but i dont' know if they would stick to that. i dont' know about the 2 an hour away. and then my 3 buddies from last years team, the captain moved and doesnt' want to play on a team this year, and the team broke up before that anyways so i dunno how it would work out. i would want to force them into practicing this year and being prepared unlike last year when we just went into tournies and played getting our asses kicked. im' not really sure what to do. any advice from anyone that has started a team or any advice just for the hell of it. i really want to hear both pros and cons. or if anyone thinks i should take a shot at the other two teams.
thanks JC

Starting your own team can be a lot of work and a lot of headaches. It can also be a lot of fun. A couple of questions to ask yourself (from personal experience):

- Is everyone going to have the same level of commitment? A mix of serious and not so-serious players will give you more headaches. If you start a team, identify the level of tournaments you want to hit (local, regional, national) and make sure everyone agrees. Also make sure everyone knows how often you'll be practicing.

- Can everyone afford it? If everyone has the same level of commitment, make sure everyone can afford it. You may want to pull some numbers together so people know what the expenses are going to be. Figure entry fees for tourneys, practice paint, travel expense (for overnight trips), paint, jerseys, etc.

- How much time do you want to devote to being the captain? Figure at least a couple hours a week just for organizing practice and stuff. At tournaments, you'll not only have to be ready to play, you'll also have to handle captains meetings, disputes, watching the scoreboard. If you win, you'll have to deal with prizes as well.

- Are you ready to make the tough decisions? As captain, you'll have to decide who's playing, who's sitting, how to play the fields. You'll have to deal with personality conflicts (arguements) and more.

Being a captain can be a lot of fun. It's also a lot of work. If you have any doubts about doing all the stuff listed above, I'd look at one of the teams who want you to try out. Whatever you do, remember to have fun.

Just a thought but if you could find some people a little bit closer you might be able to practice more often and stuff like that, but has long has the other guys dont mind driving a couple of hours then it should work out.
