Thermal Lense

Hey guys, i know how n00bish this sounds, but what exactly is a thermal lense? i.e. what makes it have its thermal-like qualities? haha

Just a n00bie lookin for answers is all

It's got an outer layer, then a gap, and another layer. Like a double glazed window. So they don't steam up. Unless the foam seperating the layers gets wet.
