The Fred Schultz story?

Can someone please fill me in on Fred Schultz and why he seems to always be the butt of jokes? For years now his name always comes up in magazine and internet artlicles. But his name is always mentioned in the context of some joke. What's the story behind that. I used to see him at local tournaments around Sacramento California. He seemed like a pretty good guy. Am I missing something?

When I started playing seriously he was already pretty much retired. he was kind of coaching Constant Pursuit in Nor Cal. So yes, I am missing "something. But what is it?
