That RL string: To the moderators

I can't BELIEVE how long that string went on for! The salient facts do seem pretty obvious to me:

1. RL were penalized for illegal markers

2. RL have the cleanest reputation of any paintball team ever

3. This occurrence will no doubt tarnish their otherwise lilly white reputation

4. But not by much! No one on the string has intentionally had anything bad to say about RL (that I have spotted)!

It had the potential to be a very interesting string, but when we just get people posting one sentence posts that could be summed up by one emoticon we aren't achieving anything except p!$$ing each other off.

This is a very interesting issue, one worthy of column inches in a newspaper (if paintball was more popular), but we have descended past the gutter press to the playground over this. That was the most boring string on p8ntballer I have EVER read! It worries me that grown men (I didn't notice any women... maybe this should tell y'all something) think that that was a worth while use of their time.

So this is a call to all the moderators to do something about a string that descends into insults, please guys, give the two (or more) protagonists each others e-mail address or something and tell them to sort it out! Maybe that is not a good solution, and I understand that when someone who is a moderator, editor of the mag etc get worked up that it is not easy to do something about it (Yes I guess I am criticising Robbo here), maybe there should be somebody independent handling such incidences.

Before Robbo flames me I would like to qualify my criticisms above: I understand that noone should have to put up with some of the cr@p people say about you and close friends of yours I am just saying that when you go "off on one" (if you'll excuse the expression) it all gets nasty, boring and is not constructive.

Also I see that it wasn't just Robbo who was responsible for the tone of this string, FAR from it!

I love this board, it is a fantastic resource, which is why I am posting this as a apeal to the powers that be to keep it that way.

The reason you didn't get this particular female 'baller commenting on that string is really because most comments I would have made were posted by others, and things DID degenerate into a rather nasty argument.

Yes, RL were in contravention of the rules.
No, I doubt very much they were intentionally cheating, just "overcooked" things trying to play UP TO but within the rules.
These are VERY different things.

I understood what just about everyone was getting at, but soon realised that due to everyone's minds working slightly differently & looking from different points of view they interpreted the words written in different ways. Unfortunately, stuff got heated very quickly, and I felt there would be nothing I could say that would help the situation so I kept very, very quiet.

The problem with threads such as the one you mention is that all of the people involved want to have the last word, be they right or wrong. That's why they can go on for ages, and turn into an exercise of repetitiveness.
Yes I agree that name-calling matches should be stopped by the mods (and I have tried and done so in the past). Honestly I must say that it never came to me to do so with the thread concerned. I will try to explain why.
A thread on which I 'ordered' everybody to tone it down a bit came about when one person representing a team accused another team of cheating. These people then went head to head, calling each other all sorts of nasty stuff. I was an impartial person in that thread. However, in the thread you refer to, I have/had a strong opinion, I agreed with Robbo that an apology ought to be made. The main difference was that there the people being 'accused' were not able to defend themselves, because they do not come to this board. That way it's pretty easy to say whatever you want about someone. So it became a matter of principle. And we all know what can happen when people disagree on principles.

Perhaps you are right, Richard. But on the other hand, there is also a lot of strong language in some posts that are not part of an argument.
I agree with you on the one sentence posts. But in all honesty, some people in that thread used harsh words, but they backed them up with good arguments.

Difficult stuff this. All I know is that the whole affair left a bitter taste in my mouth, and I think I can safely say that the same goes for the two 'leading characters'.

Peace.

Tricky situations

I understand that the whole situation is more complicated than I made out, I like to take a kinda reductionist view with things like this to strip away some of the stupidity...

Anyway, I just wanted to air my request that moderation steps in a bit earlier with this stuff.

I have to say that it wasn't the strong language I was objecting to, just the childishness and nastyness. I unlike most of the people on the string don't know anyone involved and wasn't there so I guess I haven't got so much to get worked up about.

Anyways, I don't mean to offend ANYONE, nor give them another post that noone wants to read, so I'll shut up now

Peace and Goddwill (despite the season)

Richard

Maybe sometimes even moderators need moderating?

I think maybe the reason there wasn't more moderation is because one of the main participants was a moderator.

It would have been better if we had all cooled down earlier. Or maybe not started so hot?

p.s. anyone know how I can log out of this nick to see if my old one works again?

Hey Manike

the only way i know of that would probably work to log off of that one would be to go into the options section and switch off the automatic login thing...that way when you dropped off and cme back you would not be logged in and could go with either of them you wanted to.
