this happend to one of my cockers, my dad got a small file, and fieled a small slot in it and then u should be albe to use a small screw driver. If your at campaign 2morrow ill try and dig out the file and bring it down, and we can have a go.

cut a slot and use a screw driver
if it's Sam's you need to file the sides and get it in the vice or try and get a spanner on it, I've never seen a detent stuck in that bad before. I was actually thinking of wacking it in the pillar drill and drilling it out. Alternatively if he can do with out it then soak the detent in some penertrating fluid, slot it and use a screw driver

Same thing happened to me, I couldn't get a good slot cut, so I just clamped onto it with a pair of vise grips and turned it right out. If you're not worried about destroying the detent, that should work great.

Can't remember what size allen key fits the detent but here's a sure way of removing it, go up a by a 4 mm allen key and measure across the flats of the allen key. You then drill the detent through carefully at the same size as the flats on the allen key. If you have a pillar drill mount the allen key over the hole and use the drill to press the allen key into the detent, the allen key will cut into the alluminum enabling you to remove the ball detent by just unscrewing as normal. Sounds a bit rash but this method has been used to remove all sorts of studs etc.

All you need to do, is get a good quality pair of pliers, lay the lcd out flat with the detent pointing up. Cut a hole in a piece of card big enough to slip over the detent, place this over the detent to protect the lcd, grip the detent with the pliers flat to the lcd, along the line of the rise. Turn anti-clockwise and it will move quite easily.
