Strains, Sprains, and uh, Automobiles...

Something to think about boys and girls: how many of you know first aid?

I've been hearing about a lot of sprained wrists and ankles lately, and it only stands to reason that sooner or later one of you will smash yourself up real well... many of you have. What do you hillbillies (like Manning) do when you're out playin' in the middle of nowhere? Most paintball fields aren't real close to much of anything.

I'm just worried about some of my paintball peeps, yes, even tha inbred ones.

Peace, I've got a weekend full of paintball ahead!

No, don't dismiss his point, it's a good one

Had my first injuries of corporate events that I've been doing for two years now to introduce new players to the game. I bring about fifteen people out each month, some get hooked, some don't, it's all good.

Had my first two injuries in the last one and his points are valid:
Most fields are in the middle of nada
Most places don't have medical expertise, or proper first aid kits
Most field people (just starting to change in my area) don't get the right training.

Now I'm lucky in that I'm married to my medical expertise who is a phone call away and wondering where I snuck off to, she patches me up all the time. (Funny thing is, I should worry more because she does organ transplants for a living.)

Very good points, and ones that field owners with just a little training and some preparation could make a big difference for someone,

Sprained ankles or wrists, help them off the field and then ask them what they want to do. Minor cuts, give them a plaster. Anything else, call the Medics

If you start giving someone first aid and don't have current qualifications, or don't know what you're doing but just want to help, and anything goes "wrong" later, you have opened yourself up for a law suit.

Sadly in these times people sue all to easily.

Old School, New Tricks
There is a "good samaritan" law in the states. MANY states here have a law protecting a good samaritan form lawsuits if they stop to help another in need.

If I break someone's ribs in the process af trying to do chest compressions, I'm covered.

I've long maintained that field refs should have first aid training. Westworld in Arizona is run by an ex EMT, and he's got enough gear out at the field to deliever a baby if required. I don't think he's ever had to, but it's kinda nice to know you can.

Prevention is the best medicine, however. Ankle braces, knee pads, elbow pads, wrist supports, all that. Barring that, knowing how to heal thineself isn't a bad skill.

first aid why would I want to know that for? Knowing my team they would have me dressed up like a nurse, bunch of sicko's that they are. [Love ya really guyz]
Basicly I look at it this way if I'm injured then I can hardley perform first aid on myself thus I don't need to know it. However I can managed to break out the ermengancy stash and take the pain away.;)

TJ's got a point. I remeber watching a game at Campaign last year whilst waiting to go on. (can't remember who was playing)

It went to a one on one, the guy tagged his opponant and ran up to grab the flag. As he was pulling it down the flag got stuck and the poor bugger ended up dislocating his shoulder. The marshals were quick on the scene and started doing the first aid thing (nice to know that they were trained) whilst waiting for the on site medic to turn up. One of the marshals then phoned the ambulance service and they asked where he was, 'Crystal Palace' the marshal replied and was then asked 'where is that as I haven't heard of it before and it's not coming up on the computer!!!'

Couldn't believe it!!
