Have you ever played before?? the best advice i would have to give you at the moment would be to go and play a few times at your local site and make sure that you realy do want to get into pballing, that way you wont waste all your money on something your not realy gonna get into.

I'm just starting out too. I used to play casually about 6 years ago, bought a 2nd hand Bushmaster and just walked on to a game every 3/4 weeks.

Now I have slightly more disposable income I want to get into it seriously. I could probably budget for around £500 start-up costs if I had to, but bear in mind I haven't fired a marker for ages.

Where do I start, I can't just walk up to a team and say I wanna join, can I? I'm going to my local site this weekend (hopefully) for a walk-on game, just to get warmed up...but this ends up just frustrating me as I want more...and the paints expensive too!

Hi Jon - have you considered marshalling? Plenty of sites are looking for people to help out- you get to learn the ins and outs of the game, you get some contacts in the industry and often you'll get better rates on paint if you play there. Also lots of sites have their own team, or host tourney events, so it's a good place to try out or walk onto scratch teams for young gun events.

As for the expense . . . well bad news I'm afraid - this sport isn'ty the cheapest around, but where else can you have so much fun in full protective gear? :D

Yeah, the marshalling idea has occured to me. I used to do a bit of it ages ago.

Problem is with my shifts I find it difficult to commit over weekends, I've had a word with my boss who will let me have every other Sat off so I can play/marshall.

I guess the best way for me to start up again is to go and play some walk-on games, hang out and get to know some faces. Have a shot at marshalling in a couple of months time.

If sites have their own teams I'll still have to invest in my own gear, even for a young guns tourny. I need some practice first!

Love to be part of a team though, makes the whole thing a lot more fun!

Sounds like a plan! If the site you play at holds tourneys, I'd recommend you sniff about for any second-hand kit people are selling. Usually tourney players have some back-up they are looking to sell to upgrade their main weapon: chances are you'll find something that could stand its ground in a tourney and has been looked after and tricked out a little. This might suit you better for walk-ons/starter tourney events than a bog-standard entry level marker. Plus if you buy some paint people will let you try these out so you can get a feel for them first.

As for getting the rest of your kit, follow Sparklie's advice: comfy goggles, and "thermal" anti-fogging ones are a must. Other than that, gloves and a pack you're ready to go!

i would get a cheap marker to start out with and get a deasant mask and get a 20oz tank cause they are pretty cheap right now, then if you still are interested in the game, buy a pack(pot holder) and then upgrade to a better gun. so good luck
