Calzaghe beat the **** outta lacey in the early hours of this morning.

Lacey heralded as the new Tyson of the mid divisions truly got a masterclass in boxing. I would say 12 rounds to 0 in Calzaghe's favour.

If you missed it I recommend you watch it today at 11.25am on ITV.

What a fight.

I think sheer youth and physical training kept him on his feet and a belief that he only had to catch Calzaghe with the Jeff 'left Hook' Lacey trade mark punch, but that was not to be.

Calzaghe's hand speed and superior boxing ability to stave off the threat of an all out war with Lacey proved the winning combination for a well underated fighter.

Marvelous Marvin Hagler will probably look upon this fight with a certain amount of De Ja Vous as this was sort of a re run of his classic fight with Sugar Ray Leonard. Everyone thought that Hagler was going to beat the living daylights out of Leonard, who had stepped up a division to fight Hagler, but yet again it had turned out that the boxer will allways beat the puncher as long as you can keep them at bay.

Hagler said that Calzaghe should be in the top 6 pound for pound best fighters in the world. I would agree.

One of the classics.

Re: Joe. Entertaining fighter to watch but hardly an entertaining fight. Just a whiff of desperation in your post there, Millsy.

However, I'm only responding because of the blatantly absurd comparision to Hagler--Leonard which in any honest universe would have been scored for Hagler as Leonard did nothing but run the whole fight except for the last 20 or 30 seconds of each round when he threw flurries of pitty-pat punches. Leonard didn't beat Hagler, nor did he win--except on the scorecards. Joe did both to Lacey. Even so, Marvin's performance was, on that occasion, dreadful the result notwithstanding.

A much better fight last night was BJ Penn vs. George St. Pierre in the UFC. Now that was a rare war.

Baca I would agree with you on the slight desperation on the fight. I like alot of others thought that Lacey would be too strong for Calzaghe and would eventualy beat him. What I like alot of others had forgotton was just how good a fighter Calzaghe is. Maybe now he will get the recognition he deserves. Even Barry Mcquigan (forgotten how you spell that) admitted that he had totally got the prediction wrong and would never doubt him again.

So slight desperation in that sense, yes. I suppose that I was waiting for the 'run out of steam' scenario after about the 4th round and it did not come. Duke Mckenzie was the only one who had faith in him from the off and even in the early rounds was stating that Joe could box the way he did in the first four all the way to 12 rounds if need be, even I was doubtfull of that.

Now the Hagler v Leonard fight, I remember going up to London at some ungodly hour to watch the fight Via satelite at the Barbican Centre. Now wether or not you think that Leonard ran during each round and then waited for the last 30 seconds or not, in boxing terms this is called boxing on the back foot. Leonard knew that he would not be able to withstand a war with Hagler and for just reason kept Hagler at bay by boxing on the back foot. As you have said the score cards read that Leonard scored more points for the punches that he threw than Hagler and therfore the winner.

The Boxer will always beat the puncher.

Sorry just noticed: I agree that Hagler was out of sorts that night, but he should have closed the ring down quicker in the early stages of the fight.

Maybe we should take this to Fight Club :)
