Baca I would agree with you on the slight desperation on the fight. I like alot of others thought that Lacey would be too strong for Calzaghe and would eventualy beat him. What I like alot of others had forgotton was just how good a fighter Calzaghe is. Maybe now he will get the recognition he deserves. Even Barry Mcquigan (forgotten how you spell that) admitted that he had totally got the prediction wrong and would never doubt him again.
So slight desperation in that sense, yes. I suppose that I was waiting for the 'run out of steam' scenario after about the 4th round and it did not come. Duke Mckenzie was the only one who had faith in him from the off and even in the early rounds was stating that Joe could box the way he did in the first four all the way to 12 rounds if need be, even I was doubtfull of that.
Now the Hagler v Leonard fight, I remember going up to London at some ungodly hour to watch the fight Via satelite at the Barbican Centre. Now wether or not you think that Leonard ran during each round and then waited for the last 30 seconds or not, in boxing terms this is called boxing on the back foot. Leonard knew that he would not be able to withstand a war with Hagler and for just reason kept Hagler at bay by boxing on the back foot. As you have said the score cards read that Leonard scored more points for the punches that he threw than Hagler and therfore the winner.
The Boxer will always beat the puncher.
Sorry just noticed: I agree that Hagler was out of sorts that night, but he should have closed the ring down quicker in the early stages of the fight.

Maybe we should take this to Fight Club
