Small playing gear for a newcomer

Hi all,
My lad is looking to start playing next month so I'm after some playing gear for him.
He's 13 so I think small will do for pants and maybe small/medium for a jersey.
Looking to keep costs down as you know what kids are like (play one day and then never again)!
