Sending Air Bottle Prohibited by Royal Mail?

Long story short, I sent a bottle over to poland to be tested and it got lost. Sent a claim into Royal Mail and it was rejected because the item is listed against the prohibitions and restrictions.

Only thing I can find on the site is about compressed gas. I sent the bottle without a reg so I don't see how it can be classed as compressed gas.

Anyone ever got compensation for a lost bottle or know for certain if it's prohibited or not?

Thanks

Did you tell them it was a pressure vessel when you posted it to poland ?

Most Uk couriers won't touch bottles if you tell them what they actually are.

I can assure you that it has nothing to do with Poland. I had a few bottles sent to me from the UK to Poland and there has been no problem with it what so ever. One even had air in it and it wasnt even stopped. I think you should put pressure on Royal Mail to get it sorted.

o well, thought they may of had different rules or something.

at the end of the day, they took it off you, so they must have some duty of care towards it? was it insured postage?

Let me know if I understand this correctly: Royal mail claims that you sent an item which is "supposibly" against the regulations and then it got lost and they do not want to give you the money?

Im not exactly sure how it works in the UK, but in Poland you usually have to say what sort of items are being sent and if something is illegal then they will not process it at all. Is that how it is in the UK? If so then they shouldnt have let you send an illegal item in the first place.

Of course I am baffled by the fact that the item you sent is considered against the regulations. Tell them to show you all of the rules which you supposibly have broken by sending your item.

As a Royal Mail group employee myself they are unfortunatly correct, compressed air bottles are classed as prohibited item even if the bottle is empty, it comes under the catogory of non-flammable compressed gas. Its the same as flying with one, something to do with the compression in the aircraft

As Poland is in the EU you dont need to complete a customs declaration, chances are it left this country ok but might not have got through the polish customs therefore its beyond Royal Mail's control.

Did you send it Signed for with enhanced compensation? if not you will only get a max compensation of £39. You could try arguing it out with them saying you told the Post Office what it was and they said it should be ok to send, sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

sending mail to europe is always risky. further East you go the higher the risk you take. personaly when i send things i take out insurance. can always make a few quid doing that to. tell them its the max of what the insurance pays for the rate you need. my brother got 300 quid for sending a letter he had a copy of at home :p
