Just been having a think over the last few days, am now in 6th form and quite a few people from my year know i play paintball, and are asking how they can start. I was thinking of starting a team for them (i wouldn't be playing, just giving advice+a bit of training). People playing would have to be in the 6th frm, but i was wondering whether it would be better to do it through school or as a private thing?

i mean, through school we get extra publicity, which could help with sponsorship etc. and we could organise it through school., but i might find problems with school with regards to safety etc.

what do you guys think?

At my school we're trying to get recognized as a sport by trying to create a competitive club team. Its hard because the school won't give us more then $2,500 a year, which is nowhere near enough to really run a tourney team, so what happens is our players eat a lot of the cost of playing themselves. Bottom line is most schools don't want to dump enough capitol into it to make it work, and Paintball requires a lot of capitol. Some schools over here have done it though, evidenced by the NCPA, although unless the NCAA incorporates paintball, I don't think schools will really give it sports status, unfortunately it looks like school teams will be club teams only for a very long time.

If your just trying to get some people together to play, its just plain easier to do it on your own, its too much hassle to try to get money from the school. At my school, in order to recieve funding, we have to have at least one openly advertised trip each term, which is REALLY expensive, and any tourneys we go to must be open as well, which means we have to let anyone who wants to play play, and we can't make cuts. Safety isn't really a big issue, the school will just make you sign a waiver. The worst part is dealing with the school, and it really comes down to politics, no school wants to publicly support what they see as a bunch of rednecks running around shooting each other.

Most of the team are second year at college now. We got $1000 for the first year, but we blew that immedietly, along with almost 3000 in extra grants from the student activities office. So we played with our clubs budget a little made it look like we spent just under $5000, and then submitted that as a budget proposal for this year. Of course, the budget council cut that proposal in half, which is fairly standard at our school for club budgets, and gave us $2500 for this year.

But this money isn't just for the tourney team, because its school money any trips we do have to be open to anyone who wants to go, and we have to advertise at least one trip a term, two of those trips last year went over 30 people, none of whom had their own gear. So we payed field fee, rentals, and paint for 30 people twice a year, then split the rest of that funding over a tourney team over 8 months, and we didn't get a whole lot to run the team with, so we applied for more.
