Questions:-

1. Do you ref events regularly? If so, where have you reffed?

2. Would you pay a green fee - say, £15 - to attend a ref course?

3. Players - what are the main "problems" you have with refs and how would you like them to behave towards you?

4. Refs - same as 3, but in respect of players.

1 - Yes and have done so at many levels

2 - Possibly, if such course was within reasonable travel and I would learn something new.

3 - The refs should know the rules and stick by their decisions, and have no bias towards their mates etc.

4 - The problem with players is that they can't seem to accept decisions that go against them without throwing thier toys out the pram, even when they are bang to rights caught cheating, or breaking rules in the book.

1 - Already bee nanswered perfectly.

2 - Probably quite a few as having well trained refs is always useful. But obviously, depends on travel and if the training would be certified.

3 - Same as Codiak really,

4 - Show respect to the Refs and not cheat at all :D Or, more realistically, don't cheat so blatantly and bi*ch when you get busted for it!

1) I have reffed 1 event, and more are planned

2) £15 mainly goes towards the upkeep of the site, which is more then fair. I find that refs aren't usually at these training sites, but the players that aren't playing usually marshall :)

3)Main problem - Inconsistancy, i have heard of bad calls been made at a few events, but its getting there, I find that arguing with a marshall is usually the wrong course of action :p

4) Take what you have a walk away in game, after the game, talk to the ref, express yourself by all means, this is how we learn what our mistakes are and how we improve.
I have personally made bad calls, but were all human and after marshalling an event I can understand how people can get calls wrong, you only have once chance to get the call right. Talk to the marshalls, don't yell to them, when we make bad calls we feel bad aswell - were here to make you day worth while, not to ruin it, we do feel bad if a bad call has been made.

1. Yes, events I have reffed are NSPL, master, woodland tourneys etc.

2. Only if it was certified by a major league.

3. Same as Codiak really.

4. Accept that paintballs are not homing missiles and even if you do hit the player not all paintballs break. If your going to play the grey then accept the punishment if caught and please don't act like a tantrum throwing two year old when a decision goes against what you believe.

1) Reffed the Masters for the first few years and the 4 seasons before that.

2) Personally, No. And you'd have to pay my travel expenses at the very least.

3) Be firm and stick to your decisions.
But remember from the players point of view they are paying customers.
So dont treat players with the same contempt as something you accidentally stood in.
(Thats why I stopped playing the PA)

4) Understand that bad calls happen to everyone.
So if it happens to your team dont get mad it always evens out in the end.

1.reffed from punters to world cup 08

2. depends who it was hosted by . and 15 quid its cheeper than alot of other things in paintball

3. codiak hit the nail on the head be fair and be consistant, and be polite i would say .

4.i think players need to relise a ref cannot see everything that is happening on a field. and it is out of order when you tell a ref to f**k off or get in there face and grief them , the ref aint gonna change his decision.

Tinkering ain’t easy
1. Punters, Local 3 man tourney (NSPA), Ionman events, UKM (a while back)

2. Aye sounds fair to me. But would like some kind of accreditation for it if possible that is recognised.

3. Aye Kev already said it.

4. As Moppy said its impossible to see everything and mistakes happen, so try a bit harder to take it on the chin.

Lack of interest

I think that this thread sums up the lack of interest in reffing which has prevailed in the UK game for some years.

This thread has had 8 replies, one of which is from someone who would want his expenses paying to attend a reffing course.

If you are not willing to make things change, nothing will change - so if people cannot motivate themselves to ref - and ref regularly - we will have the same core of people reffing events are getting tired of abuse if and when they make mistakes - and even when they make the right calls.

The UKPSF would probably accredit a ref course, if the course structure was submitted to them for review. After all, the EPSF were the originators of the ref course, and there are quite a few people still about who took it.
