There is usually a CPPS pre-season ref clinic each year.

To be frank, though, reffing is a case of learning as you go in most cases. Most events are short of refs so do not be afraid to ask.

You'll meet a lot of people and make some good friends along the way. But you do need a thick skin, because you can't please everyone.

The PSP has probably the most advanced and well-publicised ref training program, with clinics before each of their events. Lane Wright runs a tight ship, and with Paul Richards on his staff things are getting even better.

They need to bring back the riot shields refs used to have. Those were life savers in the 15bps days.

To be honest those shields just got in the way, the only thing they did was give a false sense of security to new refs, that after the first game/point was quickly lost.

The clear ones were good, the solid yellow JT ones didn't help much.

There were plenty of times I sent refs with them to check a guy and the shield was lit up like a christmas tree, ref was pretty thankful for it. I normally kept low under the streams and was fine, but they helped some guys out quite a bit.

the PSP system is pretty cool, the training itself is neat but their pay structure is awesome, basically every time you ref an event your pay goes up as your experience goes up! :)
