Recommended reads

Well, since this is the brain box, I'd hazard a guess and say that some of you may actually have picked up a book at some point in your lives.

I'd like to know which books (preferably non-fiction) you guys recommend to the rest of us and why.

Right now I'm reading Bill Bryson's "A Short History Of Nearly Everything". It's a fun book that has a witty way of explaining the history of Earth and all that's on it.

I'll post (a lot) more later, but I'd like to hear your recommendations too.

The Baroque Cycles - it's fiction but i think it would appeal to you Buddha.

Old but mind bending.

Gates of Fire by Steven Pressfield

Based on the battle of Thermopylae

Stalingrad by Antony Beevor is very good. Slightly disturbing but good.

Also the cruise of the cachalot by Frank T Bullen is amazing if you like real life adventure, better than any fiction book.

If you liked Stalingrad, may I also recommend The Downfall, Berlin 1945 by the same person? Equally disturbing...

Not really. The movie Der Untergang was based on information from that book, as well as The Last Battle by Cornelius Ryan, the diaries of Hitler's secretary and so on.
Mostly the bits dealing with the battle for Berlin were taken from the book.
