Several years ago I played novice tournies with a team called The Who from the midlands. We actually did ok the year I played with em, got a lot of firsts and generally finished in the top 3or4. It was a great experience and I have some nice medals etc to show for it. Also taught me the real meaning of "tight".

Problem is I still think I prefer to play recball, I dont like getting up at 5am to drive 2 hours to play a tourny. Although have to admit recball is just as expensive....

On the other hand, Im not the best player and dont play as much as I used to but Im better than most new punters, and perhaps me still doing recball is unfair on them?

Mostly I play walk ons but occasionally thats not possible and you end up with punters. In these cases you sometimes feel like its unfair and try to take a backseat.... After tournies its hard not to instinctively punish those newbie mistakes everyone makes their first few games.............

I'd be interested in your opinions should I move on play tournies again and leave the recball players to their recball or just carry on occasionally playing recball. I guess I should just do what I like..... but.... that wouldnt generate a thread....

I was rec-balling yesterday and i swore i would never do it again if thats what punters are like now....

The number of times there were punters with shots smack bang in the middle of their googles and still playing on... and when i mean playing on... i mean for 5 minutes or so...

And there were other aspects of the day i did not like.. but would of loved if i still was a puinter...

its like once you've had a car with air con.. you can't go with out...

once you've used an "Angel" ( insert what you like)... you can't used a tipp 98/inferno.... i mean where would you be without that temp gauge.....

I play both tourny and rec ball at walkons and i prefer the tourny scene in this country to the rec side at the mo. much more fun and better friendships.

If you want a good rec game you have to go over to the states and play there.

why dont you turn up at a tourny and rent yourself out to a new team or similar, that way you get to have a laugh and improve your playing skills.

Nothing improves you like some good competition

Searching for the pro-tour....:S
I've only been playing a few years, most of which has been tournaments and its definatly the way to go.

I do occasionally play walk-ons but i'm getting sick of muppets in camo playing on!

I agree with Aliens idea, find yourself a local team and see if you can get a few games with them! Most of the tourny players i've met have been
a friendly bunch :)

I'd say do what u enjoy the most (that doesn't help much i know) irrespective of how much it does/doesn't cost. If that means playing rec so be it, if in that case u r fed up with newbies playing on (i know what u mean, p1sses me off too:mad: ) then i would suggest checking out your local sites to see what the marshalling is like. If their worth their salt (is that a real phrase:confused: ) then they will spot these cheats and pull them straight away and if anything like me will chuck them out if they persistantly do it.

Move to tournament play.

I'm not sure by newbies if you mean first time customers but if they are they'll play on because: -

1. They are unsure of the rules and aren't sure what constitutes an elimination.
2. Want to get their monies worth
3. Will be allowed to play on occasionally cos' thats where the money is.

I've absolutely nothing against rec ball and play it when I can. Tournament play on the other hand will help you improve your technical and team skills

Ps 'worth their salt' goes back to Roman times when salt was part of the wages. Judging by todays news reports you could pay an entire legion with a fast food burger:D

Depends on how I'm feeling that day. Sometimes a game of recball can be fun - no pressure, no prizes, no big deal. I may play hard in some games, but in others I may hang back and just talk it up or try to help some of the newbies. It can be just as fun helping a newbie get his first elimination as shooting out half the opposing team. :)

The way I look at it, tournaments are serious and rec is fun. Kinda like the difference between running on a training day and just going for a walk on the beach. One is purpose driven, the other is pleasure driven.

For myself, I still prefer tournament play because of the challenge and adrenalin factor. To each his own...
:D :D :D

An additional thought - if rec isn't challenging enough and you don't want to do tournaments, see if there are any teams practicing at the field and see if they need an extra player. Most teams are happy to have decent players jump in games with them. You'll get the challenge of tournament play without having to get up early :p
