I used to design chargers and speed controllers for them many years ago before digital controllers.

It's all about the controller, batteries, motor and gearing.

The less on resistence the controller has, the better it is.
The more capacity the batteries have the better it is.

The motor windings, battery capacity, gearing all have to be matched to get the maximum out of the setup.

Balancing the motor is a good start, also matching the batteries, and servicing the cars bearings.
