The idea I is gonna suggest will be repeated in Part 2 of a pair of 'Views' I recently did on the NXL and it's problems but I've decided this one can't wait. It's not like it will make any difference but I occasional get stupid and live in hope...
So here goes:
Currently at each event the NXL plays approx. 20 total matches with the potential for a few extras added for those missed at prior events. Chicago, for example, as a result has 22 or 23 matches on the schedule.
I mention this in relation to what is and what is possible. At present the league matches simulate a "season" of matches ostensibly for the purpose of determining conference winners and so on--however, in reality all the "season" does is seed all the teams in the league toward the WC final tournament which makes the seasonal matches neither terribly relevant to the teams or spectators.
However, if the NXL took divisions of 5 teams and played round robin prelims to seed top two in each division you could follow-up prelim round with a one game semi final playoff then finals match up and only play 23 matches per event. Using this formula each event would have an ultimate winner, prizes could be awarded, there would be an immediate reason to watch matches and teams could still be seeded for WC finals.
Just an idea.
