- Thanks section

Robbo, thanks for letting me put this on here (and taking part in it) for my work experience project.

LemoandeX for responding so quickly and being the first person to fill out any of the questionnaires, online or otherwise.

Trigg503 for being the first person to put “yes please” next to sex, I was waiting for someone to do it.

BreakawayBP for pointing out my mistake and everyone for using common sense to fill out question 8 instead of 9 as I incorrectly put.

THE RESULTS - Very long post ahead

[You will need to view the full sized image as otherwise it would not be possible to clearly see the results]

Below are the results table for the research I conducted as to find out who the players are; as to whether they are mainly students, business owners or all a manner of all other titles or aspects that could define them.

All results are going to be compared via their gender, age group, whether they are a student or employed and if they are a regular or occasional player, these will be compared against a number of factors. Most tables have been organised so that the item answered most will be at the top, then in descending order so the least popular or least answered shall be at the bottom of the table.

You may notice that in some boxes there are letters as well as numbers, these are for being able to compare the factors showing a difference between them, lower case means for a small difference where as upper case would indicate a larger.

QUESTION 8: HOW DID YOU FIRST DISCOVER PAINTBALL?

http://s191.photobucket.com/albums/z204/Bunker_the_wolf/?action=view&current=Howdidyoudiscoverpaintball.jpg

According to the table the main proportion of players seems to of discover paintballing via their friends followed by invited to a game, their could be a possibility of the two being connected as they do seem to be very much alike, but as to that I would of thought the option ‘given as a present’ would have been higher up on the table, as that would also relate back to having to invite someone to a game (if that there were to be a group going, more on that later). Due to the large amount of people that use the internet in the modern age I believed that many more people would of discovered paintball by stumbling across a page or picture depicting or talking about paintballing.

Apart from those above my other predictions seems to be correct as most of the other methods listed seem to be rarely encountered, such as sites, which as seen in my home town are more likely to be hidden up in woodland or in a secluded area. Also TV, film and other moving media seems to support my initial ideas as there are very few programmes or films that have paintballing in them outside of the paintballing industry itself. The same applies to advertising, print or otherwise.

QUESTION 9: FACTORS

http://s191.photobucket.com/albums/z204/Bunker_the_wolf/?action=view&current=Whichoftheseappliestoyou.jpg

Question 9 was used as to discover which of several factors had or still do apply to players. In my predictions I thought that male players would be more likely to have all the equipment needed to play, which is proven correct in this table as 67% of all males own the equipment compared to the females 31%. It also seems to be that men are more likely to go paintball of there own accord rather than to be recommended doing so. One of my earlier predictions was that the under 18’s were more likely to have their own equipment as they would have much more free time comparatively than an over 18, yet this was wrong, count wise as there is 1 more over 18 that has their own equipment.

In regards to the section stating those who were apprehensive I had always imagined it to be fairly low, but I didn’t imagine the occasional player stats to be as low as it is or of those who have never played as most new players in essence seem to worry constantly about the pain factor.

QUESTION 10: PLAYING TIME

http://s191.photobucket.com/albums/z204/Bunker_the_wolf/?action=view&current=Howlonghaveyoubeenpaintballing.jpg

For this set of results I found that most had met my initial outcome. Although I had expected for there to be a few more females players in the two years + banding, there is a comparison here between male and female, for some strange reason its classed as a small one, as it seems to be that 34% more males have played in the long term compared to that of the females. I would of expected that there would have been a few more players in the under 18 as well as 19-29 groupings to be playing for over a year and two years plus but as stated it does seem to be that more students are playing for over one year and those who are employed for over two years. Personally I cannot see the correlation between the two other than the fact a company may be using paintball as a team building exercise over several years.

QUESTION 11: PLAY TYPES

http://s191.photobucket.com/albums/z204/Bunker_the_wolf/?action=view&current=Whichoftheseplaytypeshaveyouencount.jpg

With this I question I hoped to find out which play type is the most known between players or those interested in the sport itself, typically woodsball I imagined to be the most heard of as there seems to be more of a focus towards that market and many more play fields of that type. After woodsball I had expected tournament or rec-ball to follow, quite closely matched but it seems tournament is the next most heard of play style, which is proven correct, but I did believe that it would have been equally heard of between both genders, but still it does seem to be something I expected that more males have heard of it as, many have said, it’s a male dominated sport.

QUESTION 12: HOW MUCH MONEY IS WILLING TO SPENT IN A YEAR

http://s191.photobucket.com/albums/z204/Bunker_the_wolf/?action=view&current=Howmuchspent.jpg

When I posed this question I didn’t really know what to expect in terms of how much people would be willing to spend a year as I’ve only just got started recently and have been trying to get an idea of my own budget but found it harder than I anticipated from not being able to look at what I’ve previously spent. I hadn’t taken into consideration at that moment in time that some teams could be sponsored lowering how much they would spend a year. The only thing I was able to do was predict what range age groups and based on how much those who have played would spend based on that period of time. I believed that most students and under 18’s would be spending up to a £1000, the 18-29 band to be spending over £5000 and the over 30’s to be spending a consider amount less per year when compared to the two other bands despite the fact they could be earning more than the two other bands. As mentioned earlier, the typical view of this being that its male dominated allowed me to predict that males are more likely to spend more on paintball a year than females, which is shown on the table.

QUESTION 13: HOW MANY GOING PAINTBALLING WHEN ORGANISED

http://s191.photobucket.com/albums/z204/Bunker_the_wolf/?action=view&current=Howmanyinagroup.jpg

When I first composed this question I imagined that there would be around 5 or 7 would be the most selected choice for this question. 7 people per group was the most selected answer followed by 16+ groups which I believed would be vary rare, even in training or woodsball, yet I should of gathered that there would be a lot more than 16 people for those who had answered to big games earlier on in the questionnaire.

QUESTION 14: WHAT WORDS DO YOU RELATE TO PAINTBALL?

http://s191.photobucket.com/albums/z204/Bunker_the_wolf/?action=view&current=Wordassociation.jpg

This particular was posed as I was quite curious as to what people associated to paintball, some of the words were to see as to what people thought of the sport, its upsides and its downsides. The top 5 were as I had anticipated, but after that came muddy, generally something I would not usually associate with anything other than woodsballs, big games or recreational games, then came pain, I would of expected a larger difference between the males and females relation to pain and the sport, but it does seem to be that men think paintball is more painful than what females do. Then the 3 “negative” factors which are laying at the bottom of the table as I originally expected.

QUESTION 15: WHAT OTHER SPORTS DO YOU PARTAKE IN?

http://s191.photobucket.com/albums/z204/Bunker_the_wolf/?action=view&current=Sports.jpg

With paintball being an “unusual” sport I expected some players to take up some “extreme” or “unusual” sports, but I havnt seem to of found much in the realm of extreme sports other than white water and freestyle kayaking, dirt jumping, and the very well practiced sport of bash the chav. It seems to be that most indulge in football or other sports, most males stereotypically play football as well as other sports and females seemed to be more into other sports. Students and the younger generation seem to be more interested in sports compared to the two other bandings who are over 18 years old or employed.

QUESTION 16: WHAT MAGAZINES DO YOU READ?

http://s191.photobucket.com/albums/z204/Bunker_the_wolf/?action=view&current=Magazines.jpg

This question is typically used to find out what magazines would be the most popular therefore the most successful if anyone were to advertise in there, but in this case it would be that what magazines people read would show their interests or other hobbies. The most popular (and greatest) magazine is PGI, read by 57% of those who took this quiz, I really did anticipate this to be at least 70%. PGI seems to be popular amongst the young, male students but female readers seem to be more likely attracted to magazines that promote a good self image/beauty magazine (in this case eve) and gossip magazines (heat) which seem to be the most popular according to the questionnaire. It also seems to be that men are much more likely to read other sporting and music magazines as well as those that are deemed to have inappropriate material in; playboy and gay times. These 3 genres of magazine seem to be read more by young males (18 and under), which seems to be a common perception for young men to be interested in.

QUESTION 17: WHAT TV CHANNELS DO YOU WATCH?

http://s191.photobucket.com/albums/z204/Bunker_the_wolf/?action=view&current=TVchannels.jpg

This question would be used for the same reasons as above, but it does seem to be that there is in fact a very small if not no paintballing adverts or programs on UK television compared to that of US television where I have found a significant amount more. According to the results it seems to be that channel 4 is the most popular channel at the moment, possibly because Big Brother is on, at first I imagined that BBC 1 and 2 would be the most popular channels followed by Sky one. Due to the amount of student and players who are under 18, I had imagined that there would be a lot more people who would watch/listen to the music channels. There was one prediction and its results had shocked me, I originally believed that students would watch more TV than those who are employed but, on a whole those who are employed watch more TV (based upon who watches more of each channel).
