Question about the fault on an IR3/A.I.R.

I took my IR3 and A.I.R. out for the second time last weekend to the OTE walk-on. However, when the AIR was filled to about the 700psi mark it started to expell air from the safety vent.

One of the Planet chaps told me I needed to open the safety vent, flip over the red seal underneath and retighten the vent.

I did this and then the marker was able to filled to 3000psi with no air coming out. However, when I then took it to chrono up, the IR3 wouldn't go above 150fps, no matter how much I/we played about with the pressure/velocity on the AIR or IR3.

Finally, having already missed 1 game I had to give up and borrow a marker (a very generous chap at Planet lent me his cocker and revi) for the day. Needless to say I was pissed!

On Monday, I emailed tech support at WDP and sent the IR3 and AIR back. I've just had a mail back to say the kit is on its way back to me. Frazer at WDP told me the exhaust valve needed replacing due to exposure to high pressure. I have just mailed him back to ask how this could have happened and what I may have done to cause this, but as I'm unlikley to hear back until Monday now, I just wondered what theories anyone here has?

I've only ever had the IR3 hooked up to A.I.R and not tinkered about with settings etc??

Thanks in advance...

Was it dumping air aswell?

And was it filled to quickly, that might have caused a spike on the reg, damaging the exhaust valve.

Hi Philip,

What do you mean 'dumping air'?

It was blowing air from the A.I.R. safety vent as described above as soon as it was filled to about 700psi - is that what you mean?

D'oh...didn't read it properly. This happend to a guy at training, i just dumped the air out of the bottle then started firing while filling for a few seconds and it was fine. We just fired whenever it started leaking. This was only until he could flip the seal.

Must admit - I'm more than a little disapointed. The whole point of spending that much on an IR3 was so that I got a reliable marker that didn't keep breaking down!

Now I'm wondering if I should have had a nice break in the sun instead and got a spyder :D

Philip - so flipping that seal on the A.I.R. doesn't circumvent the safety valve working? I wondered if I had inadvertently stopped the safety valve working by flipping it - sending to much pressure into the reg/valve etc?

The little red seal is very slightly tapered & not designed to be flipped over, can do to get yourself out of trouble,i have 2 angel airs & they all sometimes leak when filled, just fire the gun once & it seals, never had a problem with low velocity on my IR3 yet,had angel n/o 46 when they first came out & had low velocity problems all the time for a year, rebuilt 3 times,WDP brought back the gun after a year.Had a angel led fault with low velocity at mardi gras this year & turned out to be low velocity, exhaust valve & guide again. You would think that would have sorted this by now.Still WDP are allways helpfull. There does seem to be alot of build problems with the IR3 at the moment.:) :) :) :) :)

This is a little worrying - the IR3's only have a 6 month warranty. How much does it cost to repair these things if they go wrong in future?

How do you stand legally about getting your money back on things like this? Not quite at that point yet, but this hasn't worked since day one (had problem with air leaking above the flash tank first), and it's a lot of brass to lay out for something which isn't reliable!
