some of it depends on personal preference and some on what position or type of ball you are playing
knee/shin pads are pritty much a must for anyone as is some form of gentlemans protection (tho a lot of players dont bother with that)
if you are playing back then the chances of you needing arm pads for crawling are low, although they are sometimes worn to catch the odd bounce.
slide shorts are a personal preference really

try stuff on before you buy em, ask your team mates what they use etc.

Buy a pair of trousers with some knee protection (if ur not Sponsor dictated, however most trousers have some) and if you are playing on decently kept fields i have always found that enough. I dont wear slide shorts but from what i have herd they are quite gd to have, also get a pair of elbow pads, try a load on see what u find most comfortable.

I'd say Neoprene Neck protector, Knee Pads then Elbow pads in that order. Most playing pants seem to come with some extra padding for the most vulnerable areas now days. A bit of rag wrapped around your neck in some semi fashionable way will not save you if you catch one or fifteen there. Slide shorts and cups I'd say are personal preference.

Defo...Martial Arts Box (cup, sweat box)..good idea...I didnt find any trouble with them, apart from struggling to keep a grip on my wang while taking a leak, they do keep that heat in!!

Nice and cheap, only cost me £6.50...trouble was, I passed Ann Summers on the way back, and that cost me £60...oh well.
