Posting abroad info needed

Hi guys I might be sending my marker over to America, ive never sent anything outside of the uk, was wondering if there is anything I need to do to insure everything is fine,
Do I have to tell the currier what's in the parcel etc etc just want to cover my back on this, also who is the best company to use

I've sent small parts to the states for various reasons, I tend to just use the post office, I believe USPS handle there stuff over there and vice versa. Just tell them how much it is worth and pay the insurance to that value.
