Portsmouth University Paintball Society have been spending their time spreading the word of competitive paintball, proving themselves to be one of the pioneering societies in the country.
When Frazer took over as President he and the rest of the committee had ambitious plans for the society to make it the best university paintball team in the country again. The biggest problem they faced was convincing the union and other students that paintball is more than just birthday parties in the woods with steamed up goggles.
It was while thinking about revealing the underbelly of paintballing that they developed ‘The Experience’. The planning of the Experience took over 2 months of health and safety forms, favours from key figures in British paintball and full time attention from Frazer and Rich. The idea was to create a snap cage within the Student Union during the Refreshers event that is held by the Union every January.
The Refreshers fair was set to attract thousands of students, all of whom were potential recruits to expand the society and introduce more people into real paintball. After collecting and purchasing all the ingredients for the event as well as producing all of the required paperwork they discovered that they would have a spotlight position. The stall booked was right outside the front doors of the union so that every visitor would be given the opportunity to enter the Experience.
To ensure that the Experience was safe they used a double wrapping layer of debris netting and made the inside of the snap cage a ‘mask on zone’ to eradicate any safety concerns. To avoid any mess, that could put people off, re-balls were used instead and the markers were chrono’d at 210 FPS or below.
When it came to the day they arrived on site 2 hours early to set up and thoroughly test every aspect of what they were trying to achieve and with the help of the current society members it was a great success. It attracted a lot of visitors throughout the day and achieved a hive of interest in signing up to find out more information. It also gave them an opportunity to give the staff members within the union a run through of what they are all about which will help them substantially in the long run trying to get better funding so that the teams can attend more events.
They were told on multiple occasions that pulling something like this off would be impossible but they proved them all so wrong. They would like to throw a big thank you out to all the people that helped to make the dream become a reality, especially Kitch who runs Super5ives on the south coast. Without his trust and generosity with lending equipment they would have struggled greatly in pulling this off.
In all it was a fantastic day and a great exposure for what lies beneath the surface of paintball. They hope to be able to do something even bigger at the next freshers events but until then they will be storming the woods and tournament fields with teams of committed and talented players. Look out for our Tournament team, Pompey Dreadnoughts, who will be popping up at more and more events over the coming months and years.
