how many friends should I bring with me to a paintball field to avoid looking stupid? I'm struggling to get more than 5 people to join in with me and I'm unsure about asking if we can join in with another group incase it sounds rude.

Should I keep trying to get more people to join in or just go and ask if we can join in with another group?

If you're planning on visiting your local site, just phone them up and ask, they'll be happy to lump you in with another group so don't worry. It's hard to tell who is your friend when they've all got combat overalls and masks on!

If you're thinking of trying a training day or something just plan to turn up and enjoy getting a pasting. You'll learn very quickly and soon be able to put up a fight with the more experienced folks :)

Like dusty said, once the masks go on - everyone becomes your friend. My first time playing punter ball me and my bestmate promised to stick together to protect each other, first round in there's a lot of commotion and everyone separates. Me and him stuck together in a little wooden fort and held our ground, shouting positions and helping each other out....it wasn't until the end of the game when my friend suddenly appeared behind me asking where the hell i'd been :D Turns out i'd been shouting at and following a complete stranger the entire round, who also happened to think i was someone he knew :D 5 Will be more than enough, as there will be loads of other players too

Every single person on this forum had the same thoughts as you when thinking of their first time...

Ring you local site and tell them you and a couple of mates want to play. They will tell you what day is best for you to come on AND they will do the organising putting you into to teams rather than you asking to join someone :)

Thanks for the advice guys:first: (sorry it took me so long I had to paint a bedroom and murder the guy who textured it:mad:). I'll ring up Outdoor Action Paintball tommorow and ask them if me and my mates can join in with a group.

another question I have is. Can I carry say a BT4 Combat and a Tippmann TPX as a backup (if I was to buy some markers) or is 1 the limit?

You'll find most people on site are friendly enough. You might find the occasional jackass in for the day that make things baws for a bit but they generally get seen to quick enough.

As for getting people to go with you, as long as you have one other person you know with you, who will appreciate the massively stupid diving roll round a corner to open fire on a tree you thought was a person, then you'll defo enjoy it and be back for more :)

And as for the side-arm. As long as it is is working order and the place is insured (I know the woodsball site I do weekend work at isn't covered for HPA o_O) then most places won't have a problem with it.
