Recently there has been a certain amount of "twitchiness" in this forum... you could almost hear the knuckles cracking, see the nervous tick around the eyes as people wait for the next reply...

Something to think on, maybe.....?

A philosophy professor stood before his class and had some items in front of him. When class began, wordlessly he picked up a large empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with rocks right to the top, rocks about 2" diameter.

He then asked the students if the jar was full? They agreed that it was.

So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them in to the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles, of course, rolled into the open areas between the rocks. The students laughed.

He asked his students again if the jar was full? They agreed that yes, it was.

The professor then picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else.

"Now," said the professor, "I want you to recognize that this is your life.

The rocks are the important things - your family, your partner, your health, your children - anything that is so important to you that if it were lost, you would be nearly destroyed.

The pebbles are the other things in life that matter, but on smaller scale. The pebbles represent things like your job, your house, your car.

The sand is everything else. The small stuff.

If you put the sand or the pebbles into the jar first, there is no room for the rocks. The same goes for your life. If you spend all your energy and time on the small stuff, material things, you will never have room for the things that are truly most important. Pay attention to the things that are critical in your life. Play with your children. Take your partner out dancing.

There will always be time to go to work, clean the house, give a dinner party and fix the disposal. "Take care of the rocks first - the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just pebbles and sand.

Now that's the sort of post I like, it puts us all firmly in our place and has my wife nodding in ironic approval !!!!

But as Urban knows, Philosophy is the search for truth or rather what we can know for sure, not too dissimilar from what a lot of my recent posts have been endeavouring to do.

Urban wins hands down with this one, a great post !!

There is actually another paragraph to that one:

After he had poured in the sand the professor asked the class if the jar was now full, they all agreed Yes. He then took out a can of beer and proceeded to pour it's contents into the jar. It just goes to show however full your life may seem, there is always room for one more beer.

Well Mr BROCKdorff, I'll endeavour to explain but bearing in mind I'm just a paint-stained grain of sand, standing in the shadows of pebbles and rocks...

He used a mayonnaise jar because his pickle jar was still half full (optimist, you see). Obviously if he'd used his pickle jar the lecture wouldn't have worked and the room would have stunk of vinegar.

Life does rocks but you very often find pebbles where there should be sand.

Points 5 to 7 is where it gets slightly more complicated...

The Stones are pebbles, The Rock is sand, and sand get's into all sorts of really annoying places it shouldn't.

But...

The Stones rock, The Rock sucks, and the movies' are pebble-dash.

And the answer to last question is, I believe, another question: Did you enjoy Las Vegas?

As for anymore questions, one cannot be told the truth, only shown. Do you want the Blue pill or the Red pill?

:D
