I had my marker confiscated from hold luggage at the steps to the plane.
That said, I've flown with them before, at the end of the day the Captain has the final say on anything aboard the aircraft.

Fill it with snakes, pretty sure you can take them on a plane, saw a documentary about it once.
Its best to just let them know what exactly is going on. Personally I think its probably best if you get it out in the airport, hold it aloft so they can see it, and shout "Ive got a gun!"
