The Paintball Association Cup
16th/17th August 2003, Witton Castle, County Durham
Tel: 01642 809589

The date of the P.A. Cup is now drawing near and we hope to finalise entries fairly soon. Please contact us as soon as possible if you are still intending on entering your team into the event.

The feedback so far from team managers has been great and confirms that media interest can be generated in our sport. Blackburn Sabres were the first team to book in for the event. Bicester Town Paintball Team report back that they have arranged a television interview with their local TV station; York City have gained interest from Minster Radio; Guildford were the first town based team to pick up sponsorship from outside of the paintball industry and we have heard that Newcastle are also chasing sponsorship. To help the team managers to gain support from their local media and businesses, a copy of a press release has been sent out to all those who have expressed an interest in the P.A. Cup. If you would like to enter a team but haven’t contacted us yet, please give me a call so I can send out a pack to you.

The Paintball Association itself has sent out press releases to local and national media and has been gaining support from the paintball industry. Trade stands that have confirmed so far include Severe Paintballs, Phoenix Paintball and Just Paintball.

Marshals for the event have been confirmed as the Manchester Marshals and Delta Paintball Team, both of whom have years of experience and excellent reputations for unbiased marshalling. The Ultimate Judge for the P.A. Cup will be Russell “Rulebook” Smith.

We hope that you are keen to carry forward the momentum that has been started and look forward to hearing from you soon.

Edinburgh book in to PA Cup

Edinburgh Keltics are the latest team to book in to the Paintball Association Cup, adding a representative from Scotland to the list of Teams from England and Wales. Another high Profle team, the Keltics are working hard to attract publicity and media support for paintball in Edinburgh.

If there are any other team managers out there who would like further information on the PA Cup, please contact me on 1642 809589.

Noooo it gets worse :p Can we not be the sunderland Magpies :D make the Geordie feel better about playing for sand dancers and mackems!! :D

I think theres no southerners as there is a Shandy drinking convention on that weekend ;)

Is there no southern teams at all entered?

Surprisingly a few teams and managers who expressed an interest are not even tourney players but regular rec-ballers looking for something a bit different...and lets face it, this is certainly different from every other tourney in the UK in the last 15 years. And there really isn't that many UK teams actually playing Campaign when you consider how many teams there actually are in the UK. So Campaign may not be that big a determining factor.

In fact on the flip side, this is "ONE OF" the last 7 man, unlimited Sup-Air event in the UK BEFORE campaign and I know some teams are actually using as a practice to "fine tune" their Campaign squads.

Guildford & Brighton both made applications but unfortunately Michael had other commitments for Brighton and no one else stepped in to take up the challenge...Tom had a huge initial surge of interest for Guildford then it kind of subsided, sad really when you think of the effort Tom put in to make Guildford one of the first teams to attract an outside sponsor...next furthest south is Coventry....which is the Midlands really...

So no...looks like the "National Shandy Drinking Championship" has taken precedent over the National Paintball Championship. I guess it just means that when it goes out to press a team from the Midlands or up North are going to be crowned the UK's first true National Paintball Champions...

Actually Gillie spoke to quite a few people at the Phoenix Cup this weekend and there's still a lot of interested teams & team managers who haven't registered yet...so we might see some from "darn sarf" yet...

Note: Liz just called to point out to me that there is in fact an M25 event between the PA Cup & Campaign...thanks sweetie...I stand corrected... :)

...and yet another update...

Hatts, you know I support this venture to the hilt so this isn't a pop but have you thought that the lack of Southern teams might have to do with events location?

Its over 350 miles from Brighton to County Durham so if you take a leisurly drive your still talking the best part of a day unless of course we flew up and incurred extra expense.

If I had carried on with the Brighton team I would of proposed the following schedule:

Thursday: Travel, locate hotel, crash out, chill, eat, drink, be merry!
Friday: Locate site, walk fields, setup kit if poss (air etc) chill some more
Saturday/Sunday: Play (and WIN!!;) )
Monday: Return home

Thats 4 nights accomadation to be paid for as well as all other expenses. Of course, we could of just bombed up Friday checked fields etc, played the weekend, return Sunday night. Less expense but extremley tiring especially with driving involved so this option probably calls for flying (money saved on hotel spent on flight, no win situation)

If your a player you need to look at two things before entering any event, cost and time. I would of endeavoured to get an outside sponsor(s) to allievate the cost but as we all know time is something you cannot buy. Its in August, holiday time for most people, so commitment to family becomes more pressing.

Because of the nature of the Cup your guarenteed play on the Sunday, not all big tournaments are like this. Those that dont make the Sunday club no doubt use that time to travel home, no choice with this event.

As its the first year and the event hasnt even been held you dont know what lessons to learn for next year but two suggestions already spring to mind:

Move it to the Midlands, equal travel for all and a journey thats more conducive to less time spent on the road and lower costs.

Do it on a Bank holiday weekend, the August one is usually major event free. This gives everyone the Monday to travel home or recover.

Like I've said before, I support your efforts entirely and you probably have very good reasons for the date and location of the event, so by all means feel free to tell me to *&^% Off and keep my suggestions to myself, I wont be offended.:)

Hmmm!! Well.......

We have just been down to the Phoenix Cup 2 day event, Left Scotland early Saturday morning, played ball on the Saturday, crashed at Travellodge, played ball on the Sunday, traveled back to Scotland on the Sunday after the presentations! (Even we stay for them!!!)

Round trip - 645 Miles.....

about the usual for us EACH month so whats a few extra miles for you guys once or twice a year?

For a change the P.A. Cup is the closest event yet!! (looking forward to a lie in!) :D

Come on guys this has got to be good for the future recognition of Tournament Paintball - (has it really progressed much in the last 10 years?)
