I've read most of the debate re: barrel length and accuracy. What about paint size and barrel diameter? How does this effect flight, speed and accuracy. What options in paint size and barrel size are there and what do you prefer?

Paint size will always be marked as .68 but the thing is the manufacturing process will result in paint that varies between say .675 and .695. Although it's only a few thousanths of an inch difference it will result in reduced accuracy, loss of velocity, balls rolling through and even barrel bursts depending on wether the fit is too tight or to loose.

A selection of barrels with differing bore sizes is very handy to have. The ultimate is a Freak set that includes a range of different inserts that you can match to your paint.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for that. Now, if I'm on a tight budget and can't afford a freak, what are some other options? Do some companies make barrels with different inside diameters? This isn't going on a very expensive gun. Just a custom 98.

Variability not necessary...

Well, the other option is to consistently buy the same kind of paint or paints of closest size to them and buy only one barrel with a diameter that most closely fits the brand you most often buy. CP, DYE, and BOA for example can be had in just about any bore size you want, so just determine what size best suits your paint and stick with it.
